2026 is a year of celebration of some of the greatest railway engineers 150th Birthdays. In our context at the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway the most of important of these occurred today. Henry Greenly, the engineer who designed our locomotives, early carriages, buildings and supervised their construction would have celebrated his 150th birthday today, 3rd June 2026.

Greenly's legacy is enormous, he has been described by experts as a true genius. There is no doubt without him the miniature railway and model engineering world would be a very different place. Greenly designed locomotives, carriages and complete miniature railways across Great Britain and Europe. Many of these are still in operation today.

In addition to his work on large scale and smaller scale miniature and model railways. Greenly wrote books, published magazines and corresponded with his contemporaries around the world on locomotives design and efficiency.

To mark his birthday our locomotives in service today, "Green Goddess" and "Doctor Syn" have carried headboards to mark the event.

To find out more and about Greenly's work on the RH&DR make sure you visit the Heritage Centre at New Romney station on your next visit

Our friends at Ravenglass Railway Museum have some more information about Greenly on their website.

Thank you Andy Nash and the RH&DRSA Heritage Group for help in preparing this post.
