We are still cleaning and checking the parts of the two Mirrlees power units. Last week, we found that the piston crowns and piston skirts all need machining. This week will see us checking the ring grooves. Once the necessary work is done, they will need requalifying with the new data recorded for the rebuild. We also found two inner valve springs had snapped; these are now all qualified and packed, ready for the cylinder heads to be rebuilt in due course. The big-end blocks were also degreased and UV crack tested, and mating faces inspected. Some will not be returning to service, as you can see in the pictures, one of them had cracked where the palm end studs locate, and the majority of these will require machine work and bringing back into specification. The rocker arms have all been degreased and are currently being stripped to have the pins and bushes checked. One of the three crankshafts is also currently being hand polished and having any minor issues corrected. Once this part is complete, it will require some modifications to accept the new and improved split adaptor.

The Mirrlees connecting rods have had their inspection, and we found a number of little end bushes were out of tolerance, so we removed them, ready for the new ones. The Mirrlees cylinder heads have also been stripped down, crack tested, and had the plugs and inlet valve seats removed and are now going through the deep cleaning process. We also have some very crusty English Electric heads to overhaul. We decided they needed a chemical clean first due to being sat out in the elements for over 20 years. These will be crack tested and pressure tested and have the valve guides and valve seats checked in the coming week.

The teardowns are now complete, and the cleaning and calibration of parts has started to see what's hot and what's not. This is where most of the time goes: chemical cleaning, hand cleaning, shotblasting, and plenty of wire wheeling (to Dylan's dislike), crack testing, and measuring before we can even think about overhauling the parts. So, we will try and keep the page updated along the way.

So here is the second Mirrlees MB 275 we had the pleasure of building with KHD Engineering Services Limited . For those who have worked on this type of engine, they will understand when I say they were built properly and are an engineer's best friend. Work carried out: crankshaft modification, cam follower modification, new main and big-end bearings, full overhaul of all parts. This was shipped out on Wednesday, and we took in another two for full overhaul, so there will be more updates to come over the coming months.

The past two weeks have been a mixed bag for us. A top-end rebuild on a Sulzer 12LDA. We also got another Mirrlees MB275...

The past two weeks have been a mixed bag for us. A top-end rebuild on a Sulzer 12LDA. We also got another Mirrlees MB275 a little closer to being finished with KHD Engineering Services Limited. We also conducted some running checks on another Sulzer 12LDA and began work on an ETH generator on a Sulzer 12LDA.
