Looking towards Buda from Pest over the River Danube at the spectacular building of the Hungarian Parliament, you can see some extraordinary history of the Hungarian capital. Budapest is one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, a cultural centre and a gastronomical destination for most tourists.
The great Hungarian king, St. Stephens founded the Matthias Church more than 1000 years ago. The church was built in Gothic style. It’s inner beauty is even more breathtaking with coloured glass windows, well preserved frescoes and mystical lighting. Visiting the Matthias Church, the surrounding Fisherman’s Bastion and the Buda Castle requires a whole day to fully explore the tremendous history of Hungary.

Yesterday, on 20 August, Hungary celebrated St Stephen's Day. It is a commemoration day of the Foundation of the State and the Constitution. St Stephen became the first king of Hungary in 1000 AD. King Stephen was sainted in 1083 and more than 10 years after Hungary started celebrating the 'Hungarianity' on the 20th of August. It is also the day to celebrate the end of the wheat harvest and the baking of the 'new' bread from the newly harvested wheat.

This is a view to the Siena Cathedral from the Piazza del Campo. The done and the bell tower of the cathedral emerges over the buildings surrounding the famous and very popular square of Siena. Evenings are just magical with a glass of Tuscan wine, some crispy pizzas and screaming swifts around towers.

In the neighbourhood of Florence’s famous Ponte Vecchio there is a bridge with four statues at each of its corner. The statues of Ponte Santa Trinita exhibits these statues representing the four seasons. They commentate the marriage of Cosimo II de’ Medici and Maria Maddalena of Austria in 1608. The pictured ‘Autumn’ ornamental sculpture was designed by Giovanni Caccini I. The statues are set for cleaning starting in September 2022.

Siena is magical, romantic, vibrant and Having an incredible history. Walking through the narrow streets towards the Duomo di Siena from the Piazza del Campo, history can be detected everywhere. The steps at the side of the Battistero di San Giovanni Battista start from the Piazza San Giovanni and lead to the Piazza del Duomo. It must have been a busy placein the medieval times when travellers of the Via Francigena pilgrim route stopped by to restock their carriages. The pilgrim route actually crossed the area where the Siena Cathedral was built.

From this single photo, I can tell which families were wealthier and which ones lived average medieval life. In the 14th century, no less than 72 towers were built in San Gimignano to display the power and influence of these families. As families died off or moved on, most of those towers disappeared or were demolished during wars. Today, 14 'medieval skyscrapers' still stand across the village, attracting tens of thousands of tourists annually. The Historic Centre of San Gimignano is also a World Heritage Site inscribed under Cultural Site of Exceptional Value criteria.

Fancy stepping into one of the small open-air natural pools of the Cascate del Mulino, even if it is a bit chilly out there? Do worry about your comfort no more. It is a natural thermal bath in Saturnia, Italy which is fed by several hot springs from the neighbouring hills. The 37.5 °C thermal water with high sulphur content (hence the smell) runs through rocks into little terraced pools creating stunning miniature waterfalls. Since the Roman times, these natural resources have been used to cure several diseases, including psoriasis or eczema. Surprisingly, the site is free to access anytime throughout the year. There is no lifeguard service on-site and no night lighting.

The ‘Kiskirálylány’ sculpture was inspired by the daughter of the award-winning Hungarian sculptor, László Márton. The ‘Little Queen’ bronze sculpture commemorates the times when the artist’s daughter dressed as a queen with the crown on her head made of paper by his father. This installation, which is an enlarged version of the original artwork, can be found at the Dunakorzó in Budapest on the left bank of the River Danube near the Vigadó square. In the background, the Buda Castle can be seen.
