Some pictures from the Maritime Museum of British Columbia Classic Boat Show. The last windlass I made….they even made a new award category for ‘Best Windlass’.
It is a No.4 electric windlass with full manual operating capability too.

They were installed more than nine years ago, and yesterday the machines went to their new home leaving the workshop empty. Any future machining will be subcontracted, as I lean into retirement. 😊

For several years now, I have thought about bringing all of the knowledge and information I have gathered over the years together into a book.
My restorations of old equipment have yielded many unexpected design features, in some cases no doubt the result of a long evolutionary process. I believe it will be beneficial to preserve and share these details along with all of the plans, sketches, engineering drawings and advice I have on making new machinery.
The book would include plans for making winches from scratch, and also operating instructions and anchor handling advice.
As for anchoring techniques, I hope to obtain accounts of difficult anchoring experiences from friends who have sailed far and wide, but also from people I don’t know, who would be interested in contributing to the book, and have a story to tell which may be of benefit, for example what went wrong and then how it could have been prevented.

I think this will take a year or two, but as I move towards retirement, it will be a fitting project to mark my departure, and I’m keen to get started.

I have attached a couple of images I think may be of interest, some of which would probably feature in the book.

Please let me know if you have an anchoring story you would like to tell!

I’m starting to work on my retirement and as part of that my machine shop will be closing in the spring when all of the current projects are completed.
Some products will still be available after that time for a while but machined chain gypsies will not. Therefore if anybody needs a chain gypsy machining, please make contact as soon as possible.
