(289)

We are a family run business and have been for over 30 years. Originally started by company owner Jim Gray, it began in Redcar. Mr Gray had one goal to build a successful business and commit himself to his customers and his business. With his determination and ambition, not to mention a memorable and quirky company name, he set about building his dream. It is this commitment and with the support and hard work of his family and team that his business grew and prospered. It is also the reason that 90% of our business comes from our customers recommendation. A number of years ago Mr Gray saw the opportunity to expand his business into the London Market. And went about building Mr Shifter London, sticking to the principles that made his business.

IT'S OFTEN THE LITTLE THINGS PEOPLE REMEMBER ❀️

A lot of people remember the big things about moving day. The lorry outside, the number of boxes, the moment the last piece of furniture goes through the door.

But it's often the smaller things that stick with people. A cup of tea when everyone's exhausted, someone taking a few extra minutes to make sure something is protected properly, a bit of reassurance when something doesn't quite go to plan, or just having a laugh when the sofa refuses to cooperate.

Here we have Geoff, making sure the wall clock if safely packed ready to move,

We've been doing this since 1978, and we're proud of the experience we've built up over the years. But we're equally proud of the way our teams treat people. After all, you're not just moving boxes. You're moving someone's home, belongings and often a pretty important chapter of their life.

What's something small someone has done for you that you've never forgotten?

FROM DARLINGTON TO STORAGE πŸ“¦πŸšš

Gary and Marsh have been in Darlington, bringing a customer's belongings back to our warehouse for storage. Before anything goes into our storage containers, there's a bit of preparation to do to make sure the furniture is properly protected for its time with us.

One thing we like to do is pre-wrap the furniture in shrink wrap before putting our furniture blankets around it. The shrink wrap helps keep the blankets securely in place, giving the furniture an extra layer of protection while it's in storage. It's a simple step, but these little details make a difference when you're looking after someone's belongings for weeks, months or sometimes longer.

It's not just about getting everything into a container and closing the doors. We want the furniture to be protected properly from the moment it leaves the customer's home until it's ready to be delivered again. Gary and Marsh are getting it ready for its next chapter! πŸ‘

HOW WOULD YOU GET THIS OUT? πŸ€”

Every now and then we turn up to a job and the first question isn't "Where's the lorry?" It's "Right... how are we getting that out of here?"

We've had fish tanks, pianos, safes, hot tubs, huge wardrobes, shop equipment and plenty of other things that definitely didn't look like they were going to fit through the door. Sometimes it's a case of taking something apart. Sometimes it's changing the route. And sometimes you just have to stand there for five minutes and have a really good think about it!

So let's put you to the test. If you had something large and awkward that wouldn't fit through the front door, what's the first thing you'd try? πŸ‘‡

IT'S NOT JUST THE LORRIES THAT DO THE MOVING 🚚

Behind every move is a team of people, and we've got plenty of characters amongst ours! Some have been with us for years, some have different jobs they enjoy more than others, and all of them have their own way of approaching a difficult move.

Give them a tight driveway, a couple of flights of stairs and a wardrobe that weighs about the same as a small car, and somehow they'll still be having a laugh by the end of it. That's probably one of the things that makes the job what it is. There's always a bit of banter along the way.

Here we have Geoff and Jeff, tackling a tricky turning on a staircase.

We've got a few familiar faces who regularly appear on our Facebook posts. Who have you spotted on a job before? And for those who know the lads, who would you say is the biggest character? πŸ˜‚

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN THIS WEEK? 🚚

One of the things we love about this job is that no two weeks ever seem to look the same. One day we're moving a family just down the road, the next we're loading a lorry for a much longer journey, and somewhere in between there'll usually be a few jobs that make the lads stop and say, "We've not done this before!"

The last few days have had a bit of everything, from local moves and storage jobs to some of those awkward pieces of furniture that seem to have been designed specifically to test our patience! πŸ˜‚ The weather, the access and the furniture might change, but the lads just get on with it.

So, where do you reckon we've been this week? Drop your guess below πŸ‘‡

Behind the Warehouse Doors

While the trucks are out on the road, there is always plenty happening back at the warehouse.

Storage containers are checked, new arrivals prepared and existing customers' belongings carefully organised so everything is exactly where it should be.

It is the quieter side of removals, but it is every bit as important.

A New One for Us This Week 🍦🚚

This Week, was a new one for us! We were called out to assist a local store where their large front pane of glass had been carefully removed to give us the access we needed to get their ice cream display counter safely out of the property.

It's not every day you turn up to a job and the first thing you see is a whole section of the shop front missing! Once the glass was out, the lads could get to work, carefully handling and transporting the large display counter without causing any damage to the property or the counter itself.

It's jobs like this that remind us why we enjoy what we do. Not every job is a standard house move, and sometimes it's about working alongside other trades and finding a safe way to move something that simply wouldn't have come through the door normally. Another interesting one to add to the Mr Shifter list!

Some Moves Take a Little More Thinking πŸ€”πŸšš

There are removals where everything is fairly straightforward. Then there are the ones where the lads arrive, have a look around and realise this is going to require a bit more thought than originally expected.

Maybe there is a narrow staircase, a tight entrance, a long walk from the truck or a piece of furniture that looks far too big for the doorway. We've had plenty of those moments over the years, and usually there is a solution once everyone stops, looks at the problem and works it out.

That's probably one of the biggest changes we've seen since 1978. The equipment has changed, the vehicles have changed and the jobs have changed, but the basic principle hasn't. Look at the problem, make a plan and get on with it.

The Little Jobs Matter Too πŸ“¦πŸšš

Not every removal involves a five-bedroom house and a couple of large trucks. We regularly get asked to move smaller amounts of furniture, individual items or part loads, and sometimes those jobs can be just as important to the person waiting at the other end.

It could be a single piece of furniture coming out of storage, a few items being collected from one property or belongings that need moving before the main removal takes place. We've also got smaller vehicles for jobs where a full-sized removal truck simply isn't necessary.

After doing this since 1978, we've learned that the size of the job doesn't necessarily tell you how important it is to the customer. Sometimes moving one particular item is the thing that matters most.
