Built on the original 1859 Brecon & Merthyr Railway line, we’ve been welcoming passengers since 1980. BMR was built on part of the abandoned Brecon & Merthyr Railway opened in 1859,finally closing in 1964. BMR opened to passengers in 1980 and now runs to Torpantau, high in the Brecon Beacons on its 10 mile round trip through beautiful Welsh scenery.

🐾 Are we dog friendly at Brecon Mountain Railway? Absolutely! 🐾

It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often, and we’re delighted to say that dogs are welcome throughout our station, in the café, and the gift shop.

Every four-legged visitor receives a complimentary goody bag with a few tasty treats, and if they’re still feeling peckish, you’ll find even more delicious options available to purchase in our gift shop from our new range of Sir Woofchester's products.

These picture-perfect pups joined us on our first train of the day for a steam train adventure with their humans, and they certainly looked ready for the journey!

We love welcoming canine companions aboard and look forward to seeing many more wagging tails at the railway. 🚂🐶

Our Next Ride and Ramble, 18 June - Remote Heights, BMR & Guided Walk to an Ancient Stone

Steam train first, then boots on. Our next Ride and Ramble is on Wednesday 18 June, a gentle guided walk with your guide Sarah after your trip on the Brecon Mountain Railway.

It is a steady-paced walk with time to enjoy the views, take photos and hear a bit about the landscape you are travelling through. Ideal if you like walking but prefer someone else to do the route-finding.

You will find full details, timings and booking info here: https://www.bmr.wales/train-rides-with-a-guided-walk/

Your photos from the railway

We always enjoy seeing your photos from the line, they really do capture the day in a way nothing else can. These brilliant shots are from Gavin Drummond, thank you Gavin, they are quite something.

If you have taken any pictures on your visit, please do share them in the comments. We are even thinking about putting together a calendar next year, and your photo could be part of it.

Our latest addition to the Gift Shop comes from Lucy, who lives just a stone's throw from our railway in Pant.

Lucy hand-pours each eco-friendly soy wax candle from her own kitchen and is at the beginning of her exciting small business journey with Breconbydesign . We are delighted to support her and wish her every success.

Her beautifully crafted candles are now available in our shop, featuring local-inspired designs and references. Lucy also creates personalised candles for any occasion, making them the perfect gift for friends and family.

Be sure to take a look when you visit us, or get in touch through her new page for all your candle needs.

As the week draws to a close, and with the sunshine seemingly fading for now, we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has visited us recently.

We hope the new Excursion Carriage was a welcome addition during the warm weather and helped make your visit even more enjoyable and a little something different.

We're now open six days a week (closed Fridays), so there's plenty of opportunity to join us for a trip. We look forward to seeing you soon on one of our services!

Join us tomorrow for another run behind our Brecon Mountain Railway steam loco. The sunshine might have gone, but the steam, the sounds and the views across the National Park are very much still here.

We’re now running 6 days a week, only closing on Fridays.

and two pictures of our loco No.2. The first (from Richard Hooper) of the loco parked in a lay-by between Cefn Coed and Trefechan in early 1980’s, and the second showing the slight difference we see today. A testament to our founder Tony Hills drive and ambition!
