This morning we saw a significant emergency response around the harbour following the activation of an EPIRB. The Coastguard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft were deployed, alongside Coastguard ground teams, Maryport Rescue, Harbour Staff and Workington Lifeboat, all working together to search the area.

Incidents like this highlight just how seriously every distress signal is treated, but also the challenges caused when a beacon is not registered. Without registration details, emergency services have no immediate way of identifying the owner or verifying whether the alert is genuine, meaning a full-scale search must be carried out.

We strongly urge all EPIRB owners to ensure their devices are properly registered, regularly checked, and securely stored to prevent accidental activation. Registering your beacon helps reduce unnecessary callouts and ensures a faster, more targeted response when it’s truly needed.

You may have noticed that we have been out and about in the harbour surveying over the past few days, having recently invested in equipment allowing us to routinely monitor silt levels in the harbour which means we can publish regular survey data and be more informed about the levels in the harbour.

We will be publishing the data gathered once it has been processed as a local notice to mariners.
