Wheelie bin distribution appointment for Oadby & Wigston http://ift.tt/1A9CGp9

Oadby & Wigston Borough Council (OWBC) has appointed CK Services, a division of the CK Group, to carry out wheelie bin distribution for their garden waste collection service.

CK Services-distribute wheelie bins for garden waste-service

The contract started in January 2015 and has so far involved the distribution of 11,500 wheeled bins to households that have elected to have their garden waste collected for composting. CK Services will continue to deliver additional quantities of wheelie bins as more and more residents register for the service.

The Borough previously operated a fortnightly garden waste collection service using re-useable garden waste sacks. Households could leave up to four sacks weighing no more than 7kg each at the kerbside for collection. This method could cause problems at the kerbside, particularly as sacks may have been over filled, split or exceed the quantity allowed.

This is the first time that OWBC have provided wheelie bins for recycling gardening waste and, as an opt in service, the take up has been a tremendous success. So far over 50% of households have requested the wheelie bin option rather than using sacks. Using a wheelie bin allows residents to recycle more garden waste and provides a single container for operators to empty.

Commenting, Karen Parkes, a spokesperson for OWBC, said. “After meeting with another company we had initially decided we would deliver the wheelie bins using our own crews. However having met with CK Services and listened to their proposition, we felt that we could work with them. This was not just based on the price, we also felt that their service would be excellent, and this has proven to be correct.”

CK Services was founded in 2011 and is now the industry leader in wheeled bin distribution, recycling and logistics. It works with over 300 local authorities, bin manufacturers and waste management companies to deliver wheeled bins, kerbside boxes and food caddies to hundreds of thousands of households across the UK.

Founder member of new plastics recycling focus group http://ift.tt/1DSfAhp

The CK Group has announced that it is to become a founder member of a new focus group within The Recycling Association, dedicated entirely to the plastic recycling sector.

Chris Collier – CK Group Commercial Director

The decision to form a new group culminated in talks between CK Group and TRA over the last year as both have long campaigned that the plastics recycling industry needs a separate, but impartial and authoritive voice in order to ensure that sector specific issues were fully understood and supported at policy maker level.

All founder members share a common goal of ensuring that everyone involved in the supply chain, at each stage of the plastics recycling process, from packaging producers to processors and recycled plastic product manufacturers, are aligned in their recycling obligations and working practices. Issues affecting the industry will be highlighted, discussed and policy makers lobbied in order that regulation delivers positive outcomes for an industry which is highly cyclical and dependent on being able to operate on a global basis.

Following the demise of a number of plastic recycling companies, many in the industry have been at loggerheads debating the root cause and the best resolution to issues which have contributed to these business failures or difficulties. Some are fi*****ng the blame at the way PRN and PERNS are issued and export markets.

Commenting, Chris Collier Group Commercial Director of CK Group said, “I read with both interest and increasing frustration many “experts” purporting to state categorically that all the problems within the recycling sector and mainly plastics (which is our business), are caused by exports and PRN. I fundamentally disagree with this very misguided and dangerous position, a position which I believe if let develop will ultimately kill our UK recycling sector and mean less waste collected for recycling.”

The CK Group believes that the UK must look to export some plastics as quite simply, it produces more waste plastic than UK based plastic product manufacturers can consume. If some plastics are not sold overseas, it will ultimately end up in landfill which would defeat the objective of recycling.
He continued, “It is important that the counter argument is heard, and loudly. In forming this new division, the intention is to create a voice of reason, one that sees the industry from a wide not narrow perspective with expert understanding. It also seems that there is a disconnect these days with many not understanding that recycling is a cyclical commodity based business where margin managing is critical. Whilst both we and TRA passionately want a strong and vibrant UK reprocessing sector, it must be robust and sustainable without protectionist intervention which we believe will ultimately fail. I think also many have muddled what PRN’s are there for – they are not to help either UK reprocessor or exporter, but to support and encourage growth in recovery levels from landfill ”

The inaugural meeting took place on Wednesday 29th April at the Daventry head office of The Recycling Association. The plastics focus group will meet on a regular basis and will feed through to their board of Directors. Another objective is appointing directors whose primary specialty is plastics onto the TRA board.

For further information and to discuss joining the group, contact Simon Ellin on 01327 703223.

Leadership qualification for CK Group technical manager http://ift.tt/1vCLI9M

CK Group Technical Manager Adrian Brown achieves leadership qualification

We are delighted that our Technical Manager, Adrian Brown has passed his Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management following eight months of study at Aspire College in Lincoln.

Based in Binbrooke, Adrian is in charge of the CK Group plastic recycling laboratories located in Lincolnshire and Melrose in Scotland.

The course covered 8 units; understanding leadership, understanding performance management, understanding how to motivate to improve performance, understanding conflict management in the workplace, developing yourself and others, solving problems and making effective decisions, understand how to lead effective meetings, understanding change in the workplace.

Commenting on his new qualification Adrian said, “I understand the plastics recycling industry, I know my technical role and how a laboratory testing unit should operate, but I have never led a team. The course has complemented techniques I have already learned from the hands on experience of managing a team of four laboratory technicians, whilst also helping me focus on issues that happen at management level and how to deal with them effectively.”

Commenting Chris Collier, CK Group Commercial Director added, “Adrian’s new skills are already making the laboratory more effective in its output. Especially time management wise as suppliers are getting their material tested more quickly which speeds up the time taken to give feedback and communicate issues. This will lead to more recycled plastic material being made available to our end customers.”

Role out of stackable plastic recycling containers http://ift.tt/1HOajxs

CK Services deliver stackable plastic recycling containers in Conwy

CK Services, a division of CK Group that specialises in the distribution and collection of wheelie bins, has completed the roll out of a new type of stackable plastic recycling container.

Appointed by Straight Ltd, and working on behalf of Conwy County Borough Council, CK Services has distributed trolley mounted stackable plastic recycling containers to 41,000 households throughout the County.

The new system comprises three recycling boxes that are stacked on top of each other and mounted on a pull trolley with wheels. Each container has a flap opening allowing residents to sort recyclable materials into the respective plastic container for paper, plastic and cans, glass and brown cardboard.

Conwy previously used a mix of boxes and bags for collection of household recycling. The new system will help with the initial sorting of recycled materials and ultimately help save the council time and money on processing costs.

After completing an initial pilot phase, the recycling container distribution project was carried out over two phases. Phase one involved the delivery of 20,000 containers during November and December 2014 and the remaining 18,000 containers were rolled out during February and March 2015.

Jon Eastwood, a spokesperson from Conwy County Borough Council said, “CK Services undertook a consistent approach to plan the assembly and distribution of the new stackable recycling system throughout the county. They performed well and the smooth running of the project was a great achievement for Conwy.”

CK Services was founded in 2011, and is now the industry leader in wheeled bin distribution, recycling and logistics. It works with over 300 local authorities, bin manufacturers and waste management companies to deliver wheeled bins, kerbside boxes and food caddies to hundreds of thousands of households across the UK.

Grant funding boosts plastic recycling in Scotland http://ift.tt/1NWeBI4

A grant from Zero Waste Scotland is about to increase plastic recycling in Scotland and increase the CK Group’s capacity to deal with more recycled plastic through our processing plant based in Melrose, Scotland.

CK Group Melrose Shredder

We have used the grant to install a new large scale plastic shredding machine. Purchased from Zerma, one of the leading, manufacturers of size reduction machinery, investment in the new shredder is part of the company’s planned expansion and desire to process more recycled plastic in Scotland. The new machine will be installed and in full production by the end of March 2015.

The plastic recycling facility in Melrose already has a range of technologies and processing machinery, and the new shredder will provide the ability to process larger sized plastics such as wheelie bins and wider diameters of plastic piping. It also incorporates metal detection and de-dusting equipment.

Adam Strafford is the CK Group’s Northern Regional Manager, commenting he said, “Our expansion in Scotland is focused towards encouraging waste management and plastic recycling companies, plastics manufacturers and other industries that produce of end of life plastic, redundant stock plastics and plastics produced during manufacturing processes to consider recycling. Now that we have larger machinery in place we can expand further and accept a wider range of plastics for recycling.”

Zero Waste Scotland is funded by the Scottish Government to support the delivery of its zero waste plan and other low carbon and resource efficiency priorities.

Recycling spent plastic shotgun cartridges http://ift.tt/1DDPHq0

The Environment Agency (EA) now recommends recycling spent plastic shotgun cartridges. This follows the EA announcement that the disposal of large quantities of spent shotgun cartridges is subject to new agricultural waste regulations meaning that the burning or burial of large quantities of spent shotgun cartridges is now illegal.

Recycling spent plastic shotgun cartridges

If you are a plastic waste recycling company, gun club, shooting range and able to accrue large quantities of spent plastic shotgun cartridges the CK Group may be able to help arrange their collection for plastic recycling.

Whilst we would prefer you to separate the metal from the plastic we do have facilities at our processing plant to extract metal parts, however this will significantly affect any price negotiations.

Facilitating the recycling of as much UK derived plastic waste as possible in one of the CK Group’s main aims. We try wherever possible to raise awareness of the plastics suitable for being recycled and re-manufactured into products made from recycled plastic. Our goal is to significantly reduce the amount of waste which is sent to landfill.

If you have spent plastic shotgun cartridges in commercial quantities and you would like to know if they are suitable for recycling please contact us.

Recycling Plastic Waffle Trays http://ift.tt/1GjLcmS

Recycling plastic waffle trays in commercial quantities is a viable option once they have reached their end of life purpose.

Plastic waffle packaging is particularly advantageous when the parts are very small or unusual in shape.

CK Group will recycle commercial quantities of plastic waffle trays

Plastic waffle trays are mainly used in electronics production and manufacturing to hold microchips, sim cards and other small components in place within an electrical device. They are also used for transporting small items along an assembly line during the manufacturing process.

Each component is rested in an embossed or pocketed plastic tray that looks like a waffle – hence they are called waffle trays or packs. The waffle packs are loaded so that each pocket contains a single component and the waffle packaging ensures it is orientated properly and can be transported safely and securely.

Plastic waffle trays will become an end of life plastic suitable for recycling once they become damaged or the device they have been used in has been stripped down and parts dismantled, some of which will be suitable for recycling.

Because most waffle trays are made of rigid plastic they are an excellent example of recycling plastic packaging waste suitable for being recycled and re-manufactured into products made from recycled plastic.

The CK Group aims to lead the way in facilitating the recycling of as much UK derived plastic waste as possible. Our goal is to significantly reduce the amount of waste which is sent to landfill.

If you have plastic waffle trays in commercial quantities and you would like to know if they are suitable for recycling please contact us.

Meta desc: CK Group, Europe’s leading provider of plastic regrind, will recycle plastic waffle trays in commercial quantities.

Wheelie bin recycling to get smaller http://ift.tt/1CPDAYn

Many local authorities are reviewing their wheelie bin recycling costs and are contemplating reducing the size of the wheelie bin used for general waste.

Councils plan to change to smaller wheelie bin size

Official figures show that one in four local authorities have chosen to replace the standard 240 litre wheelie bin with 180 and 140 litre models in a bid to save money, encourage recycling, and to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

In 2014, this change affected almost 6 million households. Critics say smaller bins will lead to more illegal fly tipping but authorities have argued that supplying more recycling bins for specific products such paper, plastic, glass and metal, as well as slop buckets for food waste, will compensate for the new smaller dustbins and will help them to meet their recycling targets.

This seems to make good commercial sense and the CK Group is interested in these economic changes for a number of reasons.

As a plastic recycling company we are pleased that plastic recycling is being encouraged. A regular flow of quality waste plastic is the life blood of our business. We have a successful business, part of which is due to the recovery of end of life wheeled bins for recycling. The fact that the bins will be smaller means that to volume of recyclable plastic will be reduced, but this should be offset by the collection of other end of life plastic bins.

Our other concern is the quality and commercial viability of encouraging businesses and consumers to recycle more plastic.

To avoid waste plastic being rejected by the recycling industry and still ending up in landfill, we must do more to educate the packaging industry to use plastics that are more suitable and capable of recycling.

This means that their end of life state must be free of contaminates and the recycling industry has invested in wash lines and machinery capability of sorting plastic waste to help address the fact that sometimes contamination is unavoidable. But this must be understood and taken into account when deciding recycling targets and deciding the type of plastic packaging to use.

In terms of targets, there is a plastic recycling packaging target for obligated businesses to achieve the following rates from 2013 to 2017.

2012 – 32%

2013 – 37%

2014 – 42%

2015 – 47%

2016 – 52%

2017 – 57%

So, the government has set its plastic recycling targets, but it is clear to us that there is still much to do to educate consumers, packaging manufacturers and food producers as which which plastics are most suitable for recycling and how best to prepare the waste such that it is commercially viable to recycle.

If you have waste plastic in commercial quantities and you would like to know if they it is suitable for recycling please contact us.

Plastic recycling Group invests in optical sorter http://ift.tt/1wZiynJ

The CK Group is delighted to announce that its has invested several hundred thousand pounds in new processing equipment which it says will improve its plastic recycling process and the quality of the plastic regrinds it sells to both plastic compounders and manufacturers who use their regrinds for direct injection moulding and extrusion.

New optical sorter will improve plastics recycling process and quality

The new optical sorting line was installed at their Binbrook processing plant last December and has since gone through a rigorous testing and commissioning programme to deliver a completely bespoke process. It is now in full use and being used by CK Group to optically sort over 150 tonnes of recycled plastic regrinds each week.

The optical sorter is able to identify different regrinds and pellets by colour; material type and granule size and then reject those that are chosen to be undesirable. Trained operators can amend settings on the cameras to detect and eject the reject fraction to leave a polymer stream to suit the customer requirements ie a mixed colour regrind with zero black fraction suitable for light coloured compounds.

This means that the CK Group is now able to provide bulk loads of plastic regrind that are not only sorted by grade, blended into 20 tonne batches and fully laboratory tested but also by defined colour. This enhances the quality of regrind and provides plastic compounders, injection moulders and extruders with a more consistent product to create efficiencies and cost savings in their own manufacturing processes.

Commenting, Chris Collier, CK Group Commercial Director said, “Combined with our investment in

Mark Whitney & Chris Collier with 20 tonne blender

laboratory testing facilities, 20 tonne blenders and a wash line, this latest acquisition adds to our flexibility to handle a diverse range of regrinds and to give our customers what they want and need to be competitive in today’s challenging environment for recyclers.”

The CK Group is one of Europe’s leading providers of plastic regrind to compounders, extruders and injection moulders located throughout the UK, Northern Ireland and Europe.

On-line grocery shopping pushes up plastic crate recycling http://ift.tt/1AM4kSr

The CK Group believes the increase in the number of UK householders preferring to shop on line has pushed up commercial plastic crate recycling rates.

Online shopping has increased use of plastic crates

Householders say they shop on line for added convenience. It saves time and means they can shop from the comfort of home. All the major supermarkets now offer an on-line shopping option and according to a Mintel report published in March 2014, on-line grocery shopping has increased by 20%, a trend which is set to continue to increase year on year.

Prior to on-line shopping, plastic crates would only have been used to transport stock from supplier to distribution centre and to store. The success and growth of on-line shopping has required the use of crates to transport food in vans to households. This has obviously increased the use of certain types of plastic crates and reduced their longevity in service.

Consequently many plastic crates are finding themselves being sent for end of life plastic recycling, perhaps much sooner than expected.

Plastic crates are made of rigid plastic and as long as they do not have any hidden infills, such as powder, which may cause contamination and therefore compromise quality, they are an excellent commodity suitable for being recycled and re-manufactured into products made from recycled plastic.

The CK Group and its network of recycling partners across the UK work with a number of leading retailers and distribution companies to ensure they receive the best recoveries for any plastic that is suitable for recycling.

We are very committed to the environment and our aim is to lead the way in facilitating the recycling of as much UK derived plastic waste as possible. Our goal is to significantly reduce the amount of waste which is sent to landfill.

If you have plastic crates or plastic dolly carts that have reached their end of life and you would like to know if they are suitable for recycling please contact us.
