Restoration and Development
The concepts of ‘sin’ and ‘discipline’ are very emotive. They come together in today’s gospel passage, where, maybe, Jesus is aware of ‘an issue’. There’s a problem, and there needs to be a solution to it. One person within a community believes that another has wronged them,

Making that belief public from the get-go may well be tempting and even easy. But it makes for another, greater problem for the whole community. Jesus’s approach is radically different. The Gospel passage highlights the importance of care, especially for the vulnerable.
The ‘sinner’ is to be held accountable, but with the aim of providing reconciliation as swiftly and as discreetly as possible. What if that proves impossible between the two? It means there is a broken relationship, which should invite some help from outside, if they are wise. It may prevent the alleged ‘perpetrator’ from jumping because they believe they might be about to be pushed.
Of course, people can pick up the wrong end of the stick. Jesus’s three-stage resolution should enable us to support all the members of the body in love. Love is not always fluffy: it takes discipline.

Take up your cross and follow me.”

This is the meaning of the Greek characters top left of the image. We have not one but many crosses. This is an example of a polystavrion which means ‘many crosses’. This one, like many, is not quite an optical illusion. The weight of each cross is borne solely on the shoulder of the carrier, but it seems as if the weight of each cross is shared, and in some way distributed across the whole. Perhaps we can take this as a visual metaphor for ‘self-denial’ within a community where we are very much not alone, even though it may appear so when we are weighed down by our own cares and concerns. Self-denial does not mean an abandonment of identity. It means a denial of the ‘selfish’ me, me, me parts of ‘self.’ Also, it can be tricky for essentially ‘nice’ people to know where to draw the line between their sense of duty to others, expected by others or not, and the need for a duty of care to themselves. It’s OK to say no if the cost to you is too high. Remember, God’s most important gift to you is you! It doesn’t mean being unkind to others, it does mean that you must award yourself permission to be kind to yourself. What follows will be a projection of that self, exhibited in words—maybe— and deeds, for sure. Jesus discerned need in others carefully, also mindful of his identity and destiny, as the Son of Man and Son of God, but He was never at any one’s beck and call.

Who is Jesus to you?

The truth Peter spoke about Jesus did not come from human cleverness, but from the Father in heaven. It is a gift of grace. Upon this rock of faith, Jesus promises to build a church so strong that even the gates of death cannot stop it.

The question Jesus asks Peter is not left in the dusty ruins of Caesarea Philippi. Jesus turns His gaze from Peter straight to us, asking it right now. Our answers cannot merely be borrowed from tradition or whispered in empty habit. Every single day, through how we love, forgive, and take a stand for the broken, our lives must answer the eternal call: Who is Jesus to you? Fr A

In prayer, never give in.

Today’s Gospel, about Jesus and the Canaanite woman, is a bit of a puzzle. Is it an example of Jesus, the (full) human being, having a bit of an “off day” and being a bit peevish towards this Gentile in this most Jewish of gospels? (The Jewish community was Matthew’s intended audience.)
If so, it’s clear he has a change of heart, and we see that actually the “good news” is for all, Jew and Gentile alike. Persistence in prayer and entreaty is the key here, and we should not set too much store by Jesus the Jew rebuffing her. After all, if she, as a Gentile, can stick at it, what about the Jews around him?
Perhaps this Gentile woman has seen signs the Jews have not and is beginning to enter the Kingdom from outside, unlike those historically known as God’s people.
Her faith did not yield, and as John Proctor reminds us in his meditation for this passage, prayer has to be persistent and determined to gain all that God has for us

Mind the step?

Taking care with one’s footing seems like common sense, does it not. Hence, “mind the gap” on the train or tram Tannoy when one is about to alight. It is conceivable we might forget that a takeaway hot drink is just that—hot—but even so we are reminded on the lid: “Caution! Contents may be hot.” It’s also true that we ought not to underestimate how stupid people can be.

Where does this leave us with “Risk Assessment” and Divine Command? Are we mindlessly to step out into the unknown? Do we dispense with reason and precaution completely? However, had Peter not faltered in his faithful obedience he would not have needed rescuing. Had he been us usual impetuous self, he’d only have had wet feet not a dunking. Poor Pete! Will he, will we, ever get it right.

I am content to believe that Jesus really did walk on the water. There is other, even more useful, significance to this story beyond the improbable surface tension of the water under His divine feet. In the turbulence of our inner and outer lives, Jesus is always the solution; no harm is willed. Iin responding to Jesus we are required often, in faith, to do the counter-intuitive.
This can mean loving one’s enemies and embracing the outcast, just as Jesus does. By becoming more fully human in this way, by emulating His earthly life, we participate in the way that leads to everlasting life. If it is everlasting, it means it is now, and by following Christ it means it can only get better until our mortal cares and concerns cease for eternity.

Bring and share

Have you been to a social where you’re asked to bring something? The host might provide the ‘main’, and you might be asked to bring a ‘side’ (note how these Americanisms are creeping in) or a dessert. This is nearly always a recipe for over-catering. There may be no main on offer, and this is a sure-fire way to ensure that the table overflows, and we go away with other people’s Tupperware (other airtight see-through lidded boxes are available) or tin foil.

Jesus just invites us to come as we are, because Jesus does not ask us to provide what we do not possess. He asks us to surrender what we do have, no matter how small or inadequate it feels. Whether it is our time, our modest financial resource, or a fragile gramme of patience, our small offerings become infinite in His hands.

This is why the invitation to the Eucharist is irresistible, if we wish to be fed with what we cannot possibly provide on our own. What ought we to bring or to give Him? It’s not Christmas, yet, the last verse of In the bleak mid-winter holds at all times.
"What can I give Him?
Give my heart."

Jesus and the mind-gym of his parables

Just as we settle into the metaphors of the kingdom of God being like practices associated with wheat harvest, another set comes thick and fast: mustard seeds; yeast; hidden treasure; pearls; a fishing net. This is quite a mental workout.
New Testament scholars agree that Jesus really did say these things. After all, analogy is a good method of teaching, and Jesus is referred to as ‘teacher’ or ‘rabbi.’ There is also agreement that these ‘sayings’ were not necessarily delivered in this order, and in the same place. Remember that the evangelists were not biographers concerned with the strict chronological order of events. The picture they draw, literally the meaning of ‘biography’ (Greek bios ‘life’ and graphein ‘to draw’) relies on careful editing of the material available to them, and they had to squeeze it all in somewhere to get the message across to their intended audiences. Matthew wrote with a ‘Jewish’ audience in mind, so, what do you know, in Ch 13 there are seven parables depicted in what appears as a single occasion. In Israelite culture, seven was a number of completeness and perfection.
However, the work isn't all done for us. These parables make the brain cells fizz, as we work out what they mean. The value is in the seeking more than the finding, and the journeying rather than the arrival. The more we ponder, the more amazing the Kingdom of God becomes both in our imaginations and in reality as we become more able to ‘evidence’ it in our lives.

This is too lovely not to share. I opened this after my school, All Saints, closed for the summer break. It was a moist moment. 25 years a priest in the Church of God, and very nearly 16 of those here in Newton Heath, of which I am extraordinarily proud, and especially of our wonderful school, which does remarkable things, and God is witnessed in those. Laus Deo.

Sowing and Reaping: the sequel

In our Gospel reading today, popularly known as the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares, what we sow, how and where it is sown, is made a bit more complicated. ‘Good’ seed and ‘bad’ seed flourish in similar conditions unless checked. Look out for those who would try to corrupt our future harvest and make it difficult to gather. That is, we need to root out evil at the earliest opportunity within and without. This parable is way before pesticides! It can be hard, tedious work, as sometimes, before some things reach reasonable development, they are difficult to distinguish.

Let’s not extend the metaphor here too far, as it’s impracticable to prick out the seedlings of wheat (left) and tares (left, also known as charnel). We risk losing some of the wheat and/or contaminating it with the tares we miss. The seeds of the tares are slightly poisonous and would make us ill.

The field is our soul, our interior life. Perhaps, then, we should read the tares as the ‘bad’ traits in us, whose thoughts lead to deeds. Therefore, let’s not sow them, or if we have, nip them in the bud, and throw away the remaining seeds at the earliest opportunity. If we don’t, they will be found in the end, and will be burnt even before that threshing floor, which is the metaphor for our ultimate judgement before the throne of God.

Mature, well-tended wheat makes wholesome flour; tares are poison. We eat of the ultimate, wholesome Bread of Life today. Imitate Him, that in our lives we sow only that which is good and leads to Eternal Life.
