For the Love of Steam

For the Love of Steam For the Love of Steam is my personal passion project.

It was my love of steam and all things narrow gauge that first inspired me to pick up a camera and to share my passion for steam, narrow gauge & railway modelling with fellow enthusiasts.

Today on The Railway Room is another look at the Talyllyn Railway, the 009 model originally built by Roger Bugg. This time, the video focuses on different models of loco No 4 in action; running in BR black, and also as Peter Sam (as the real loco was the first time I saw it), including hauling the special BBC filming train!

On May 14th, 1951, a Railway Adventure began in a remote Welsh valley. Today, we celebrate 75 years of preservation on the Talyllyn Railway: the first preserved railway in the world.

What started as a desperate attempt by a few dedicated volunteers to save one rusty narrow-gauge line ignited a global movement. Over the last three-quarters of a century, the Talyllyn has transformed from a decaying slate carrier into part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, proving that no railway is ever truly "finished" as long as it has a Heart of Gold.

I've got some small sized steam action for you today, with a visit to the South Park miniature railway in Cheadle Hulme to see some 5" gauge trains in operation. The line is run by Stockport Model Engineers, and runs public trains most Sundays!

Experience the heady atmosphere of the 1884-built narrow gauge steam engine Minas de Aller No. 2 from the front verandah on board the steam train. While this 0-6-0PT spent its working life in the coal mines of Asturias, Spain, it is a rare surviving example of 19th-century French engineering from Paris having been built by Corpet-Louvet.

Standing right next to the smokebox and chimney, this Short captures the unfiltered sights and sounds of this veteran locomotive as we pass other trains on the busy double track at the Statfold Barn Railway.
