Aircraft of the Month: MiG-17

This month’s featured aircraft is a real Cold War classic — the MiG-17, which recently stopped off at Lydd Airport on its way to the Eastbourne Airshow.

The MiG-17, known by its NATO reporting name “Fresco”, was developed in the early 1950s as a follow-on from the famous MiG-15. With its distinctive swept wings, compact design and impressive performance, it became one of the most recognisable jet fighters of its era.
Although designed as a fighter aircraft, the MiG-17 went on to serve in a wide range of roles around the world and became well known for its agility, ruggedness and reliability. Today, examples that remain flying are rare and always draw attention wherever they appear.

Its visit to Lydd was a fantastic sight for aviation enthusiasts, staff and visitors alike, offering a close-up glimpse of an aircraft that represents an important chapter in military aviation history.

Lydd Airport was pleased to welcome the MiG-17 during its journey to Eastbourne, where it joined the line-up for one of the UK’s much-loved airshow events.
A memorable visitor, and a very worthy choice for our Aircraft of the Month.

Every landing tells a story — and this one is about legacy ✈️❤️

Yesterday, Lydd Airport was proud to welcome Emma and the AirFirst team as part of their inspiring “Beyond the Record” Challenge that sadly had to be postponed in mid June due to weather conditions.

The challenge is an unofficial attempt to go beyond the current Guinness World Record for the most airfields visited in 24 hours, with an incredible 130 airfields planned.

But this journey is about far more than numbers.
It is a tribute to the men and women who took to the skies before us, often in circumstances far more dangerous than we can imagine. It is about remembrance, legacy, and helping to protect the aviation history that must never be forgotten.

The challenge is raising funds for three incredible aviation heritage charities:
🛩️ The Kent Battle of Britain MuseumPreserving the world’s largest collection of Battle of Britain artefacts and memorabilia.
🛩️ Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage CentreSupporting the restoration of Avro Lancaster NX611 “Just Jane” and keeping vital wartime history alive.
🛩️ Stow Maries Great War AerodromeProtecting the largest and most intact Great War aerodrome in Europe.
These charities do more than preserve aircraft and airfields; they preserve stories, sacrifice and history for future generations.
Every landing in this challenge represents a step through aviation history and a promise that those stories will not fade.
If you can, please donate via the GoFundMe link below, or simply share this post to help spread the word.

Help keep our aviation history alive, one landing at a time.
Because some legacies deserve to fly forever ❤️

✈️ Proud to have hosted Aerobility at Lydd Airport

Lydd Airport was proud to have hosted Aerobility Charity recently, the inspiring charity that makes the freedom of flight accessible to people with disabilities.

As one of four sites used by Aerobility, we’re delighted to play a part in supporting their charity operations and the incredible work they do through flying lessons and aviation-based programmes.

Aerobility helps participants build confidence, independence and ambition - taking the ‘dis’ out of disability and proving that aviation can be open to everyone. It was a pleasure to host Aerobility at Lydd Airport, alongside Lydd Aero Club , and to support their ongoing mission to make aviation more accessible.

🚁 Olie’s Aircraft of the Month🚁

This month, Olie has chosen something a little different for our Aircraft of the Month — a police helicopter!

It’s always exciting to see such an important aircraft in action, and a great reminder of the many different types of aviation that operate in and around airports like Lydd.

A fantastic choice from Olie this month! 👏

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of Beaver Scouts to our airport! 🦫✈️

It was a fantastic opportunity for the young adventurers to explore the fascinating world of aviation. They got a behind-the-scenes look at how our airport operates, learned about aircraft, and discovered what it takes to keep everything in the air!

We loved sharing this experience with them and inspiring the next generation of aviators and explorers.

Thank you to everyone who made their visit special!

✈️ Congratulations to Ernie!

We’re delighted to share that Oliver (Ernie) Dowle has successfully passed his Air Traffic Control exam.

This is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the dedication, focus, and professionalism required within the aviation environment. Air traffic control demands precision, sound judgement, and continuous learning — and this milestone marks an important step forward.

Everyone at Lydd Airport would like to congratulate Ernie on this accomplishment and wish him every success as he continues his ATC journey.
