| Shoplifter jailed after being caught stealing from numerous shops across Derbyshire

A shoplifter has been jailed after being caught stealing from numerous shops across Derbyshire.

Simon Spencer’s offending spanned several months between January and June this year in which he targeted major supermarket chains including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Farm Foods and One Stop.

He stole a wide range of everyday and household goods including dishwasher tablets, food and wine worth more than £3000 from shops across the county including Ripley, Alfreton, Derby, Long Eaton, Sawley, Sandiacre and Codnor.

He also evaded capture for a number of months and was made the subject of a wanted appeal.

Officers from the Force Proactive Team, a specialist unit targeting those causing the most harm in our communities, were tasked with finding Spencer.

They tracked him down inside Farmfoods in Codnor on Tuesday 2 June and caught him in the act of attempting to steal 20 tins of tuna.

The 51-year-old, of no fixed abode, was arrested and charged with 23 shop theft offences.

He pleaded guilty to all charges and was jailed for 46 weeks during an appearance at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 4 June.

Sergeant Oliver Priddle, of the Force Proactive Team, said: “For Spencer, his time on the run is over. I am relieved to know he is behind bars and can no longer cause not only financial harm to stores, but also distress to retail workers who have a right to work in a safe and comfortable environment without fear of crime.

"This case should serve as a warning to others - we will relentlessly pursue offenders, regardless of any misguided sense of impunity they believe they have.”

🚓 Raising awareness … Reducing Crime 🚓

This weeks tips are relating to car safety and travelling with your child safely.

We are sharing this due to a recent report we have had from a member of the public that someone has been seen driving with a child in the incorrect car seat.

🚨 In the station we have our Passenger Pals books for young children to help explain why it is so important that they sit in their car seat correctly and understand the importance of a seatbelt. Please come by to an engagement or the station if you would like one 🚨

💛 Volunteers Week 💛

📍 Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.

✅ In the force we have many volunteers who we believe deserve to be recognised for their hard work and dedication to the force.

👮 Volunteers such as Special Constables, give up their own time weekly to help their communities and support our constabulary! We also have our amazing Police Cadet leaders who willingly run the programme to help the youth of today follow their dreams to becoming Police Officers.

🎈 We would also like to raise a special toast to our amazing volunteers in our local community speedwatch teams. These volunteers are dedicated to making the roads of Derbyshire safer for all. The photo below is of one of our Breaston volunteers, who has recently won the first Breaston Community Champion Award for this services to the community and many years in the Community Speedwatch.

💛 From everyone at Long Eaton SNT, we thank you!!!

🚓 SEIZED 🚓

Yesterday, officers stopped a vehicle and roadside checks revealed the driver was disqualified from driving.

The driver was reported for the offence and the vehicle was seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

Driving whilst disqualified is a serious offence that puts all road users at risk. Our officers will continue to proactively target those who choose to ignore driving laws and endanger others on our roads.

If you have any concerns about illegal driving in your area, please report it to us 🚔
