Your impulses, ideas and deeply held dreams are there for a reason. If you needed a sign to follow them and trust the process, let this one be it!!

When The Guardian reached out and asked if I’d contribute to their ‘The Experts’ series, I was delighted, but my expectations were low.

I assumed it would be a brief chat, I’d suggest a few tips, and we’d be done in 10 minutes. I wrote down my top five recommendations for folks planning a move and thought that would be more than enough.

That’s… not what happened 😂

We were on the phone for almost an hour. We talked about EVERYTHING. How to prepare for moving day, how to pack, the best boxes/bubble/tape to use, how to lift heavy items, what to eat, what to unpack first at the other end, how to emotionally handle the upheaval of moving home, and more.

And I realised, I knew much, much more than I thought I did.

It turns out, that thing you find easy and common sense? Not everyone else does. That’s why it’s YOUR thing.

So stop assuming that “everyone knows” the things you know about your area of expertise.

Stop assuming people don’t want to hear what you have to say.

Stop assuming you don’t belong with the experts.

Because I do. And so do you.

Moving day is about so much more than shifting boxes (though it does help to have a pair of strong arms to lift ‘em!)

The process is emotional. It’s logistical. It’s longggggg.
You’ve been packing for weeks, fighting with estate agents, living out of a suitcase and trying to reassure the cat who genuinely doesn’t know which way’s up anymore.

On moving day you need someone to show up and have it handled. Who’s got the van, the blankets to protect your stuff, knows how to transport houseplants without snapping them in half, lets you have full control of the playlist and gives you a chance to say goodbye to your old place without rushing you to get going.

Moving day needs big-sister-with-a-van energy.

I help women move every single week and over time I’ve started to notice some patterns. So I thought I’d assemble a little list of my top big sister tips ahead of your moving day to keep things easy, calm and stress free 🥰

1️⃣ Pack EVERYTHING in boxes

I know you think it’ll be easier with bags. It won’t. Boxes are stackable, bags are not. They’re less overwhelming to have sitting in your flat pre- and post-move as you pack and unpack. They’re easy to carry multiple at a time. Ikea make ones you can assemble and use with zero tape. Buy the boxes.

2️⃣ ALWAYS pack your book boxes half books, half linen/toys/puffy coats/scatter cushions/anything light.

It might be satisfying to pack an entire box of books, but you will not enjoy lifting it. This goes for everything - always choose more boxes over heavy boxes.

3️⃣ Pack a suitcase

Put everything you’re going to need for the first 3-4 days in your new place in a suitcase. That way, regardless of where you’re at with unpacking, you have everything you need to be able to live and function without constantly digging around random bags and boxes searching for that one moisturiser you like.

4️⃣ FOOD!

Make sure you have food for the night before the move, moving day itself and the first 48 hours in your new place. Some of my favourite things are WATER, big smoothies, drinkable GoPro protein yoghurts, Trek protein bars, Softmints, crisps and chocolate ofc. I also like powdered milk, instant hot chocolate sachets, instant latte sachets, etc, so you always know you can assemble a cuppa with just a kettle and a dream.

5️⃣ Hire me!

No creepy messages, no showing up hours late, no going through your stuff, no shouting at you to hurry up, no smashing your valuables, and god knows what else. Just your big sis, in a big van, strong enough to lift anything, ready to hang out and help you have the fastest, easiest and most fun move of your goddamn LIFE.

BONUS TIP: Buy a sack truck. They’re little trolleys that pack down super slim but fold out to be able to wheel pretty much anything.
