A delightful start to the day assisting with a yard move for two charming small ponies. I was forewarned that they were challenging loaders, and that the mare has a tendency to rear and erupt if overfaced.
Yet, both loaded within minutes and arrived at their destination happily and unperturbed. My approach centers on ground work and pressure and release techniques; no bribery, no lunge whips, no drama, simply quiet, clear leadership that a horse can understand.
It is about timing, feel, and guiding the horse to seek the release rather than into or away from the pressure is a better way to describe it.
Helping horses in this way is the highlight on days like this. While I assist a few horses a month with loading problems organically during my transport services, I am considering launching dedicated loading training sessions.
