Half a million geese can't all be wrong. 🪿

It's World Migratory Bird Day, and Saskatchewan is right in the middle of the autumn rush. Snow geese, sandhill cranes and, if you're lucky, endangered whooping cranes stop here to rest and refuel on their way south.

Last Mountain Lake is the place to start. Founded in 1887, it's the oldest bird sanctuary in North America. Go at first light, when thousands of geese lift off at once.

Golden hills, deep blue lakes. This is October in Saskatchewan. 🍂

Around 40 miles northeast of Regina, four lakes line up along the Qu'Appelle Valley: Pasqua, Echo, Mission and Katepwa.

Our tip: start in Fort Qu'Appelle and follow the quiet back roads along the shoreline. Pull over often ☺️

Canada’s national animal has a surprising British connection. 🦫 🇬🇧

Born in Hastings, England, conservationist Grey Owl made his home in Saskatchewan in the 1930s — sharing his cabin at Ajawaan Lake with his two beavers, Jelly Roll and Rawhide.

His cabin still stands today in Prince Albert National Park. You can reach it by hiking approximately 20 km (12 miles) one way, or by canoe across Kingsmere Lake. 🌲🛶

Dark skies are worth protecting. 🌌💚

That’s exactly what happens at Saskatchewan’s Dark Sky Preserves. Cypress Hills was designated in 2004, while Grasslands followed in 2009 – protecting places where artificial light is kept to a minimum and the night sky takes centre stage.

Thousands of stars. Open horizons. And nights worth staying awake for. ✨
