If you've moved home recently you may well have employed the services of a professional removal company. And if you chose the extra piece of mind of a moving company that offers an advanced payment guarantee, and operates to a Trading Standards approved Code of Practice then you will have been moved by a BAR Member company.
In that case you will have noticed just how strong your removal men (or women) were and how much stamina they had, carrying all your household possessions out of your old home and into your new one. But the removal operative has to be so much more than just someone who simply 'lifts and shifts' furniture even though they will lift around a tonne in weight each. Because carrying out the final part of the house moving process, an experience often cited as being one of the most stressful events you will go through, requires the following skills:
✅ The calculation skills of an experienced quantity surveyor. The moving team leader will quickly need to assess how best to safely pack up all your belongings into the the van (or vans) and communicate this to the rest of the team so things are moved in terms of right order.
✅ Unflappable. There will be very little the mover hasn't already experienced or overcome before. From being told that something unexpected - and large - needs to be added to the move or a piece of furniture that needs to be dismantled, they will take it all in their stride.
✅ The patience of a saint. Most moves still take place on Fridays and though the BAR is working hard behind the scenes to resolve the issue the money transfer system means that too often the keys aren't released when they should be and the movers can sit waiting in the vans for hours on end, unable to move you into your new home.
✅ An unofficial degree in counselling. Your mover knows how arduous the moving process can be, yet they will always be there to answer all your questions, and will keep everyone calm, with a cheerful manner and some well-judged humour.
So if you're moving home - or office - when you're looking for a mover, remember to look for the badge.
