📦 Shipping a 1kg parcel but being charged for 4kg? Here’s why.

It could all come down to volumetric weight.

Some carriers calculate shipping costs based on how much space your parcel takes up, rather than what it actually weighs.

And those extra charges can quickly eat into your profit margins. 💸

The good news? A few simple changes to your packaging could make a big difference.

At SAMOS, we don’t charge volumetric weight on our US delivery service.

From 1 November 2026, Product Identifiers (PIDs) will become mandatory for ecommerce shipments entering the EU.

Generic product descriptions will no longer be enough. Customs declarations will require more detailed product information, including SKUs, manufacturer references and standardised product identifiers where available.

The good news? SAMOS can help. ✅

Our shipping system can automatically generate the required PID information for eligible EU shipments, at no extra cost.

✅ No additional manual processes
✅ No unnecessary fulfilment delays
✅ A simpler way to prepare for the changes

Black Friday and Christmas are nearly here — and for ecommerce brands, peak planning is already well underway.

Stock? ✔️

Fulfilment? ✔️
Returns operation? That one often gets left until last.

But once peak orders start landing, returns follow quickly behind. And if your process isn’t ready, the pressure can build fast — slower refunds, more customer service queries, delayed stock recovery and valuable products sitting out of circulation.

Returns should be part of your peak-season planning, not an afterthought.

We’ve pulled together practical steps ecommerce brands can take now to make sure their returns operation is ready before volumes increase.

Sometimes the smallest details cause the biggest delivery problems. 📦

You can have the right address, the right customs data and the right carrier — but if the label can’t be scanned, that parcel isn’t getting very far.

It’s a simple check, but one that can prevent unnecessary returns, delays and unhappy customers.

And as Simon says, if he had a penny for every parcel returned because of a faint label… he’d be doing rather well by now. 💰

You’ve got the order.
You’ve got the customer.
You’ve got the parcel ready to go.

So why is it sitting in customs?

Sometimes, the issue comes down to something as simple as the shipment information not accurately describing what’s inside.

Incorrect HS codes, vague product descriptions, the wrong country of origin, incomplete customs declarations or inconsistent documentation can all trigger additional checks — turning a straightforward international delivery into hours or even days of unnecessary delay.

And even when your processes are solid, international shipping regulations can change, sometimes without you realising until a shipment gets held.

In our latest guide, we cover some of the most common compliance mistakes that can slow international deliveries and what e-commerce businesses can do to reduce the risk.

Scaling internationally? It’s worth a read.

When a parcel goes wrong, the carrier isn’t always the problem. 📦

Sometimes, the issue started before the parcel even entered the network — with an incorrect or incomplete delivery address.

And when you’re shipping at scale, those small errors can quickly turn into delays, failed deliveries and unnecessary costs.

That’s why address validation is such an important part of the process. Checking customer address data before dispatch can save a whole load of problems further down the line.

At SAMOS, it’s not just about getting parcels from A to B — it’s about helping make sure they get there successfully in the first place.
