In 1877, a little club outside London needed £10 to repair the roller that smoothed its lawns, so it charged the public a shilling to watch 22 men play a strange new game called lawn tennis. Around 200 people showed up. The fundraiser cleared exactly ten pounds, and that accidental event became the most prestigious tournament in tennis, now worth over half a billion dollars a year.

Even the famous all white dress code was an accident of the same era. Victorians found visible sweat scandalous, especially on a woman, so players wore white to hide it. The rule was so strict that women weren’t allowed dark shorts underneath until 2023.

A broken roller and a fear of sweat built the most famous tournament in tennis.

For almost 100 years, the richest people on earth have flown to one Swiss clinic to be injected with the cells of unborn lambs, because they believe it makes them young again.

It started in 1931, when a surgeon named Paul Niehans was handed a dying woman with hours to live. Out of options, he injected her with cells from the gland of an ox. She didn’t just survive, she lived for years. Niehans became convinced fresh cells from young animals could turn back time, so on the shores of Lake Geneva he opened a clinic and began injecting his clients with cells from unborn lambs. Then in 1953 a gravely ill Pope called for him. The Pope recovered, and overnight the little clinic became the most famous address in medicine. Churchill came. Greta Garbo came. Marlene Dietrich and half of Hollywood came. Today, Clinique La Prairie is the most exclusive longevity clinic on earth, where a week can cost as much as $60,000 and billionaires still fly in chasing the same promise: that you can pay to stay young.
