A huge thank you to colleagues at DP World, whose Transaid Month fundraising, together with matched funding from DP World, has funded four bicycle ambulances. We’re also incredibly grateful to Tempus Novo and sbh, who have each generously funded a bicycle ambulance.

The bicycle ambulances have recently been deployed to rural communities, where trained volunteers are ready to provide emergency transport when it is needed most, particularly for pregnant women experiencing complications and children with severe malaria.

In hard-to-reach communities, distance and a lack of available transport can make reaching a health facility quickly extremely difficult. Community-based emergency transport helps bridge that gap, connecting families with trained health professionals and potentially life-saving care.

New research involving 325 students at the Multimedia University of Kenya found that fewer than one in ten consistently wear a helmet when travelling as a motorcycle passenger.

Our Head of Programmes, Sam Clark, has a new article in Humanitarian Logistics Association Magazine's Logistics Response Digest, exploring why strong local leadership and resilient transport systems are so important for sustainable development.

Drawing on Transaid’s experience, Sam looks at how investing in people, skills and local institutions can create sustainable change, from strengthening professional driver training in Uganda to improving motorcycle helmet safety in Kenya.

The article also highlights a principle that has underpinned Transaid’s work for almost 30 years: working in partnership with governments, training institutions, transport operators and communities to strengthen existing systems and enable locally led solutions.

This September, the MAMaZ team has been working alongside District Health Teams in Chitambo and Serenje Districts, Zambia, to strengthen community-based emergency transport and referrals.

As part of the latest activity, 12 Emergency Transport System (ETS) bicycle ambulance riders, six custodians and 23 Community Health Volunteers received training to build the skills and knowledge needed to support emergency transfers, particularly for pregnant women and children with severe malaria.

The team also carried out mentoring, coaching and monitoring visits across communities where the ETS is operating, providing an opportunity to support volunteers, assess progress and identify areas where further assistance is needed.

This ongoing training and support is helping communities to respond effectively when a health emergency occurs, particularly for women and children in hard-to-reach areas.
