📍ST. ANDREWS CATHEDRAL , SCOTLAND 🏴
St Andrews Cathedral is one of Scotland’s most dramatic historic sites — not because it’s intact, but because of its impressive ruins and powerful history.
When it was completed in the early 1300s, it was the largest cathedral ever built in Scotland. It stretched about 119 metres long, showing how important St Andrews was as the religious capital of the country.
The cathedral was dedicated to Saint Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint. For centuries, it was the centre of the Scottish Church and attracted pilgrims from across Europe who came to worship relics believed to belong to the saint.
During the Scottish Reformation in 1559, the cathedral was attacked by reformers who opposed the Catholic Church. After that, it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin, with stones taken for other buildings.
Before the cathedral was built, St Rule’s Tower marked the original religious site — according to legend, it held relics of Saint Andrew brought to Scotland in ancient times.
