I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this garden before visiting!

👉 Make sure you save this and follow 🥝 if you’re short on time but not ambition!

This is the Di**le Garden, a sunken flower garden located in Shrewsbury in the English county of Shropshire. The Di**le Garden features various flower gardens, grassed areas, rockeries and water features and is such a peaceful space. It is the centrepiece of The Quarry Park which is a 29 acre park in the centre Shrewsbury dating from the 1700s.

The Di**le Garden, which is locked and unlocked each day, is free to visit and open Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. The Quarry Park itself is open 24 hours.

The town of Shrewsbury is well known for its Tudor architecture and as the birthplace of Charles Darwin. The centre has, in general, retained its medieval street plan and is a walkable space. The nearby castle, old jail and library, once a school that Darwin attended, are also worth visiting. It takes around 2.5-3 hours to get to Shrewsbury from London with a change in Birmingham. The train station is in the centre of town. I’d recommend spending a night or 2 in Shrewsbury.

Although once known as Monte Diablo, Convict Lake just south of Mammoth Lakes in California, was renamed following events that started on 17 September 1871.

On that day, 29 prisoners including murderers, horse thieves and train robbers, escaped from Nevada State Prison in Carson City. The prisoners split into two groups, with one group heading toward the Mammoth Lakes area. They murdered an innocent mail rider out delivering mail for the first time which prompted the local community to gather together a posse of men to hunt down the killers. The posse caught up with the convicts and on 23 September a shoot out occurred with Indian Deputy Mono Jim and agent Robert Morrison killed.

By 1 November, 18 of the 29 convicts had been caught. The rest were either killed in the shootout or captured and lynched on the trip back to the prison. Mount Morrison, the highest mountain in the area, was named after Robert Morrison. Its nearby smaller peak is named after Mono Jim.

How many times have you arrived at a must see spot only to be surprised at how many other people must see it at the exact same time as you?! 😂 I’ve decided that it’s all part of the experience and to just go with the flow and that’s what you’ll have to do when visiting the Idiom in Prague.

This installation in the Municipal Library is definitely worth visiting but keep these things in mind:

🎟️ it’s free to enter the library to view the Idiom but it’s likely you will have to queue so I suggest going early or late in the day (I didn’t notice a queue when I was in the area the evening before!)

📚 the library is open on Monday (1pm - 7.30pm) and Tuesday to Friday (9am - 7.30pm). It’s closed weekends. Opening hours seem to change though and are seasonal so check before heading that way

⏰ allow 30+ minutes for queuing and viewing (longer in Summer and during December when it could be upwards of 2 hours!)

🥱 if you don’t want to queue, you can view the Idiom from the 2 staircases either side of the main staircase, however this will give you a side view only and you won’t be able to approach it
