As the evenings draw in, I'm already dreaming of snow, in all its forms.
Méribel in January: a fabulous dump of snow, before the February half-term peak. I spent the week between hotels and chalets there, working out exactly what each one gives a family that books it.
For families, Lapland is its own kind of magic: reindeer, huskies, a visit to Father Christmas. It's the kind of magic that stays with a family long after they've unpacked. October and November are when I start booking it for Christmas next year, the best dates always go first.
And then there's the winter retreat. Somewhere like Forestis, sitting high in the mountains with views straight from your terrace, the kind of place where the mountain and the quiet do the work, nothing left to plan once you arrive, apart from perhaps a few spa treatments.
