Logistics after 2 years in pandemic – The effects of a constantly changing environment in logistics

Shortage of capacity generated by restrictions, problems in maritime commerce, a lack of drivers, and the rise in energy and fuel prices are all effects of the pandemic which have generated a slowed pace of delivery, a critical element to be assessed considering the increased demand generated by the boom of e-commerce.

The increase in electronic commerce because of the pandemic and the rise in energy costs has increased the pressure over the product distribution networks, a critical activity that enables the growth of a variety of industries. Because of this growth in e-commerce, a shift in investor and tenant interest to this market has been visualized bringing new important opportunities for partnerships to lower costs in management as more infrastructure is available among stakeholders.
Previously the most important objective of supply consisted in generating solely reduced cost solutions, because of the increased demand, and the included restrictions; reaction time in deliveries has become critical in the perceived quality of the logistics services. Generating low-cost solutions is now not the only requirement to fulfill the requirements of the demand for the services, fast-paced solutions focused to deliver on an exceeded capacity in the logistics market is now a requirement to fulfill a quality rich service.
Stakeholders in the logistics services have had to adapt to all changes generated in the logistics world. The world of logistics is facing the challenge of meeting the increased demand with restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The increment of supply chain management prices could continue to increase if the supply chain management is not done properly; the importance and benefits of generating valuable partnerships and building successful logistics solutions has never been higher.

Changes in customs controls – United Kingdom 2022

Since the start of January 2022 in the United Kingdom, companies interested in generating exports between Great Britain and the EU have been obligated to submit complete import declarations and their respective full customs controls.

The British government established last year some changes that took place since the start of this month in customs controls; it is now mandatory to submit complete import declarations and their assigned controls. As stated by the United Kingdom government, β€œgoods must be presented to customs and the export declarations must be entered into HMRC systems to decide if any further physical checks are required.”.

EU exporters to the United Kingdom must now ensure that they are registered in the REX System (Registered Exporter System) so that the involved parties can apply for the benefits of the December 24, 2020 agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom to their customers.
The changes allow the registered exporter to "self-certify" the preferential origin of the goods it exports by including a specific declaration on the invoice or any other commercial document related to the shipment.

These new regulations will generate changes in the procedure companies make to generate exports and imports between great Britain and the EU. It is required for companies to get updated on the subject as the change has already taken place and could generate problems if not assessed correctly

The world of logistics in 2022

We started the year with different perspectives on the status of logistics. Over this short period, since the year started, we all have gotten a small glimpse of how the logistics world will behave over 2022 based on the status of demand and supply, join 4D Logistics Services on this discussion over the expected news and tendencies over the logistics world in 2022.

Resilience on Supply Chain
The effects of the pandemic are still hitting the status of supply availability, and this will be a great consideration for the year 2022. Freight rates have been in constant increment because of how the pandemic has generated situations in which demand overcomes supply, increasing the price for products and freight rates. This year will result critical for the creation of smart solutions to minimize costs and maximize capacity, a resilient supply chain will be a β€œmust” for 2022 as forecasts generated by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development indicate catastrophic outcomes on a lack of resilience on the supply chain. The unsuccessful attempt of generating a resilient supply chain could lead to an increment to the changes in the prices of imports and exports, adapting to the situation will require smart solutions that fit the current capacity of supply.
Disruption in the supply chain is understood as the alteration of any stage of the supply chain caused by agents external to the product. A resilient supply chain constructed for the year 2022 will consist of one that is prepared to face the cumulative disruption of capacity and availability that the pandemic brought. Using technology, loT, employing optimization techniques to address demand as tools against adversity could be a solution where maximizing and minimizing the appropriate KPIs will bring increased efficiencies translated into a higher resilience over the fluctuations in supply.

Communication among agents in Supply
Different technologies have been popularized throughout the last year which could come to the logistics world in no time because of the number of benefits that they hold.
Blockchain is a technology employed to increase agility and security in the exchange of information, we are likely to see a strong introduction of the technology in 2022 making communication between supply chain players more secure, transparent, and efficient.

Sustainable logistics
A higher concern of the ecological footprint could lead to an implementation of environmentally friendly logistics processes.
Boosting collection points, promoting micro-fulfillment centers [closer to the city and target destination] to prepare orders, or opting for zero-emission fleets are some of the measures that companies will be implementing to reduce waste and consume less energy in the world of logistics. We are going to see an increment over the usage of sustainable logistics concepts over 2022 so getting a basic understanding of the concept will help to introduce these incremental changes.

Specialized service – Customer oriented experience
The world of logistics needs clear communication among all members for proper functioning, businesses are increasing the perceived value over specialized service getting an increased interest over a service that delivers fast and clear operations with a focus on optimizing the lead time on operation and response. Creating enabling systems for faster communications will become a change that the logistics world will face in 2022.

2022 and Logistics
The logistics and transportation sector has always been in constant evolution and this 2022 will be no different, we will be facing challenges on communication, capacity, environmental impact, and specialized service preference. Preparing for these changes will be vital to sustaining healthy business operations; 4D Logistics Services is at the forefront of service and change, we construct our service based on needs and tendencies of the market creating efficient solutions that fit our modern world needs.

Supply Chain management crisis could increase prices of computers, clothing, furniture, and other products by more than 10%.
A constant increment in freight rates for the transportation of containers is leading to a possible increment of price to different products. Prices to certain products could escalate to more than 10% over their current price according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
The increment of freight rates is estimated to have a significant impact on the price of products by 2023, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the companies will be forced to adapt to the changes in the prices of imports and exports, adapting to the situation will require companies to overcome the challenges generated by the bottlenecks in supply chains.
Smaller economies that depend on imports will be the most affected generating price increments in their products, demand is high and there is growing uncertainty on the supply side; ship deliveries decreased by 12%, due to the labor shortage induced by the confinements. The problem is that there is a new regulation introduced under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that will require the replacement of the old fleet and not having enough new ships to renew them will generate uncertainty, cost pressures, increased freight rates, and delays in cargo movement.
Freight rates are expected to remain high; the increase in ocean freight rates was estimated at 243% between August 2020 and August 2021. Equipment and container shortages, reduced reliability of services, port congestion, and increased delays and downtime in port are determining factors that are generating a negative impact on the freight rates of the transportation of containers. Scheduling on time planning for the container crisis and looking for the right business partners in supply chain management has become vital to assess the current problematic situations that the supply chain crisis has generated. 4D Logistics can help you stay competitive over the changes in supply chain management, we are committed to delivering quality service with the most competitive rates. We are at the forefront of change always looking forward to strengthening your business.

Introduction of 5G in Logistics
With the usage of 5G in logistics, connection errors, insecure networks or interference will disappear creating automated and secure processes. 5G will bring opportunities for the field of logistics to increase efficiency through quick data transfer, enhanced communications, and improved digital systems. Although the implementation process can take some time, the benefits of the change are immense with big enhancements to the methods to assess logistics.

1. Greater visibility and control over transportation systems
5G technology has the potential to optimize vehicle-to-vehicle communications and improve road safety, which is key at a time when autonomous vehicles are gaining prominence. Similarly, 5G can positively alter communications between vehicles and infrastructure (ex. traffic lights or bus stops) and contribute to traffic improvement, reduction of external risk factors, and efficiency of public transportation.

2. Reduced losses through data availability
Increased data availability translates into fewer losses generated by human error. With the installation of 5G-enabled IoT sensors on products, a large amount of data such as location, temperature, humidity, pressure, and additional information important for correctly managing goods in a supply chain can be made available reducing costs assigned to possible losses.

3. Agile and secure port operations
With 5G, it will be possible to digitize a myriad of customs processes that are usually done manually and tend to complicate the movement of goods in ports. The latest technology, which would integrate intelligent transport systems, sensors, cameras, and networked mobile devices, would make it possible to create an integrated communications system that is more agile and easier to control.

4. Digitalization of processes and more speed
Unlike the fourth generation, the fifth generation can connect more users and up to 100 times faster. It can support more than 1,000 devices at speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, which can mean larger coverage areas and faster communication to open opportunities in logistics operations, thus becoming a key enabler for data-driven analysis and decision making with Big Data and artificial intelligence.

Adapting to the new technologies will become vital to stay competitive in a constantly changing world. 4D Logistics constantly evolves and adapts to new methods and technologies to generate the best service available in the market.

What is the bullwhip effect in supply chain management and how to prevent it from happening?
The bullwhip effect in the supply chain is triggered by an increase in consumer demand for a product. The point of sale then generates an order to its supplier that will be greater than the real consumer demand seeking to have a safety stock or to take advantage of volume discounts.
As you move up the supply chain, demand grows again because at each level the stakeholders will add extra units for their safety stock to assess their expected demand, not visualizing the real demand for the product generated by the client. Delays in supply will also be introduced by waiting to accumulate higher volume orders and thus reduce transportation costs, which in turn will encourage demand for more safety stock.
And so on, up the supply chain to the manufacturer, who will perceive an artificially magnified increase in demand that could lead him to increase production in response to demand that is much higher than actual demand.
The bullwhip effect is associated with the saturation and the availability of the distribution channels. It is frequently presented when a new product is introduced to the market, when a product presents seasonality or when the sales of a product have not stabilized
How can the bullwhip effect be assessed?
Having a continuous information flow, systems thinking and a proper data analysis with smart decision-making models, the bullwhip effect can be damped generating accurate forecasts that will prevent saturation in the distribution channels and will reduce costs associated with having excess inventory. Properly managing the logistics behind demand can be complicated when no systemic visualization is being done but the benefits from preventing a bullwhip effect are immense as a cost reduction generated by excess inventories can be prevented.

Trends in Supply Chain Management
β€œTo improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” - Winston Churchill

Techniques and technologies to assess Supply chain are constantly evolving and businesses must address these changes to remain significant in a competitive market. Supply chain management is evolving towards an online market, business intelligence, software usage, and sustainability considerations.

Online shopping
Online sales have exploded over the last decade and with them a need for effective warehousing, inventory, and transportation control. Suppliers are taking products from manufacturing more often rather than from a warehouse, businesses are changing to achieve lower costs generated by transportation. Ensuring an effective inventory control pathway is critical to this entire process.

Respect for the environment
With the environmental awareness that consumers are developing, when purchasing products, they are not neglecting to evaluate the logistics of getting the merchandise to the point of sale.
This trend is most notable in the food industry, where grocery stores and restaurants in some countries are beginning to work with locally sourced brands. Correctly assessing transportation by choosing the right fit for the job, is one measure to decrease the carbon footprint

Improving business intelligence
More and more companies are improving the information flow in their business, so the planning sophistication; demand planning, and sourcing capabilities will grow to meet that newly imposed standard which allows companies to know how and in which part of the supply chain to improve.

Labor optimization
Companies that use SCM software to track their inventory are now turning their attention to labor optimization and the ability to manage each worker more efficiently. These systems can create a list of tasks for a worker so that he or she can perform multiple types of jobs in a single trip or with as few moves as possible.
