🇬🇧 A CLOCK WITH A SECRET 500-YEAR-OLD BELLS & OVER 1,000 YEARS OF HISTORY… ⛪🕰️
This isn’t just another cathedral in England. This is Derby Cathedral and its walls hold some extraordinary secrets.
Right in the heart of Derby, surrounded by busy streets and everyday city life, stands a building whose story stretches back more than a thousand years.
And the deeper you look, the more fascinating it becomes. 👀
📜 IT ALL BEGAN IN 943 AD
The first church on this site was founded during the reign of King Edmund, long before the England we know today existed.
The magnificent tower you see today was completed in 1530. Standing approximately 65 metres tall, it has watched over Derby for almost five centuries.
🏛️ A CATHEDRAL BUILT ACROSS CENTURIES
In the 1720s, most of the old church was demolished and rebuilt, but the historic tower survived.
The elegant interior was designed by Scottish architect James Gibbs and completed in 1725.
Only in 1927 did the building officially become Derby Cathedral.
🕰️ THE CLOCK WITH AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY
In 1927, local clockmakers Smith of Derby were appointed to replace the cathedral’s clock mechanism.
In 2009, the historic clock faces underwent restoration using 23½-carat gold leaf.
But here’s something even more surprising…
Parts of the mechanism connecting the clock to its hands were made from old cavalry gun barrels associated with the Jacobite uprising of 1745!
🔔 BELLS THAT HAVE ECHOED THROUGH CENTURIES
High inside the tower hangs what is recognised as the world’s oldest ring of ten bells.
The heaviest weighs approximately 965 kilograms, and some of the bells are centuries old.
The cathedral’s carillon also plays traditional melodies at set times throughout the day.
🦅 AND LOOK UP YOU MIGHT SPOT SOMETHING UNEXPECTED
Since 2006, peregrine falcons have nested on the cathedral tower, making this historic landmark their home.
✨ BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAILS
Inside, you’ll discover intricate ironwork by Robert Bakewell, historic memorials, remarkable architecture and a peaceful atmosphere far removed from the streets outside.
During my visit, I also had the opportunity to capture an organist playing a beautiful reminder that this isn’t simply a monument to the past. It’s a living part of Derby’s culture.
Sometimes the most extraordinary stories are hidden in places we walk past without a second thought.

🇵🇱 ZEGAR Z TAJEMNICĄ, 500-LETNIE DZWONY I PONAD 1000 LAT HISTORII… ⛪🕰️
W samym centrum Derby, pośród ruchliwych ulic i codziennego miejskiego życia, stoi budowla, której historia sięga ponad tysiąca lat.
W latach 20. XVIII wieku rozebrano większość starego kościoła, pozostawiając historyczną wieżę.
Nowe wnętrze zaprojektował szkocki architekt James Gibbs, a przebudowę ukończono w 1725 roku.
Co ciekawe, dopiero w 1927 roku świątynia oficjalnie otrzymała status katedry.
🕰️ ZEGAR, KTÓRY SKRYWA NIEZWYKŁĄ HISTORIĘ
W 1927 roku lokalnej firmie zegarmistrzowskiej Smith of Derby powierzono wymianę mechanizmu zegara.
W 2009 roku odrestaurowano jego historyczne tarcze, wykorzystując prawdziwe złoto płatkowe o próbie 23,5 karata.
Ale najciekawsze dopiero przed nami…
Elementy mechanizmu przenoszącego napęd do wskazówek wykonano z dawnych luf kawaleryjskich karabinów, związanych z powstaniem jakobickim z 1745 roku!
🦅 A TERAZ SPOJRZYJCIE W GÓRĘ…
Wewnątrz można podziwiać kunsztowne metalowe zdobienia autorstwa Roberta Bakewella, historyczne pomniki, niezwykłą architekturę i atmosferę zupełnie inną niż na ruchliwych ulicach miasta.
I właśnie takie chwile najbardziej lubię w podróżowaniu.
