🚌 40 Years of Bus Service Deregulation: A Historic Journey 🚌

As we tip into the month of October, this month marks a huge milestone: 40 years since the deregulation of bus services in the UK.

Without the landmark 1985 Transport Act, we—and so many other commercial bus operators—would never have had the opportunity to run local bus services, build our businesses, and transport millions of passengers across our city region over the past four decades.

But this year also marks a pivotal turning point as we see the reversal of deregulation and the introduction of franchising, with the resultant loss of many small operators who have given years of loyal, dedicated service to our region and the travelling public.

To mark this historic occasion and celebrate our industry's heritage, for one day only, we’re bringing a classic back to the city’s roads.

🎉 On Monday 26th October—exactly 40 years to the day of deregulation—we will be operating a former MPTE/Merseybus Leyland Atlantean (A101 HLV - 1021) on our 838 service, departing from Hunts Cross at 06:19!

Get it pencilled in your diary and come join us for a nostalgic step back in time.

SERVICE UPDATE: From Monday 21st September to Friday 2nd October, service 838 will be diverted in Bootle, omitting Paisley St and part of Regent Rd, instead travelling via Leeds St, Vauxhall Rd, Boundary St, Blackstone Street to Regent Rd to resume normal route.

UPDATED 18/09/26 - diversion route changed due to the closure of Great Howard St.

Great video uploaded this evening by the Kieranstravels YouTube channel, showing ADL Trident ALX400 X10 BUS operating the 838 service from Hunts Cross to Liverpool Freeport at Seaforth.

She’s not a bad old girl for just under 24 years old. With PSVAIR next stop announcements and hearing induction loops fitted, she’s good for the next year…….when franchising see’s off every SME bus operator in the region. Enjoy us whilst you can!

Well you know it’s July when you’re out and about with the Orangemen for their annual parade in Southport. ADL E400 X1 BUS and ADL Trident X10 BUS are pictured, awaiting passenger in Liverpool City centre earlier today.

I was reminded earlier, that three years ago today, the last PB 1.0 services operated independently before being absorbed into the Stagecoach Merseyside fleet at Gillmoss.

Wow 😮 Where have those three years gone!

This year see’s a number of milestones, my 50th, PB’s 25th and 40 years since bus deregulation, which paved the way for independent operators like PB to start up and flourish. Most came and went, some were successful and others less so, but in just over eight weeks time, all of that comes to an end, with the advent of franchising across the City region. Time will tell whether further operators decide to call it a day, but one thing is for sure, the bus scene across the City will be different………..and the jury is out as to whether it will deliver all that the political leaders wish to achieve 🤔
