A part-exchange that has sat in the corner for three months is not stock, it is a parking problem that cost you money to acquire.

The usual reason it stays there: it does not start, has no MOT, and moving it feels like more hassle than it is worth. So it waits, depreciating, taking up a space that could hold something that sells.

It does not have to start to be moved. A transporter does not care.

Work out what that space is worth to you per week, then decide whether it is really cheaper to leave it there.

Three things a vehicle movement quote should tell you, and often does not.

One, is it driven on trade plates or on a transporter? They are different jobs at different prices and it changes who is liable for what.

Two, does the price include the driver getting back? If not, it will find its way onto the invoice eventually.

Three, is it a fixed price or an estimate? An estimate is not a price.

Ask all three of anyone quoting you, us included. A supplier who answers all three plainly is usually a supplier who turns up when they said.

If you are having an EV moved, agree the arrival charge before it leaves. In writing.

Not "it will be fine". An actual percentage.

A long motorway run in cold weather can take a lot more out of a battery than the range figure suggests, and the difference between a car arriving at 60 percent and arriving at 8 percent is the difference between putting it straight on the forecourt and losing it for the rest of the day.

We have been moving EVs since 2017 and we quote the arrival charge up front. Whoever you use, ask for it.

Bought at auction? Check the storage clock before you check anything else.

Most auction houses give you a few days before storage charges start, and they are daily. A car you meant to collect on Friday and got to the following Wednesday can quietly cost you more in storage than the movement itself.

So: find out the free period the moment you win it, book the collection before you arrange anything else, and if you cannot get there, get someone who can.

It is the cheapest mistake to avoid and one of the most common.
