The first steam railway line in the world opened in 1825, connecting Stockton and Darlington in England. The line was intended to transport coal. The wagons were pulled by steam engines whilst passengers were transported by horse-drawn carriages.

On this day 188 years ago Yorkshire's first mainline rail opened! The Leeds and Selby Railway is still in mainline use for services operated by TransPennine Express and Northern. These trains operate from Leeds to Selby, Hull, York and beyond. 🚂

The world's first intercity railway was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It opened on 15 September 1830. It was also the first railway to rely exclusively on locomotives driven by steam power, with no horse-drawn traffic permitted at any time; the first to be entirely double track throughout its length; the first to have a true signalling system; the first to be fully timetabled; and the first to carry mail.

The longest railway in the world is the Trans-Siberian railway in Russia! It is 5,772 miles long, passing through 8 different time zones and taking 8 days to complete. The longest railway in the UK is 722 miles long that takes you from Aberdeen to Penzance.

A 16 year old once impersonated a train conductor and drove a Brooklyn train as scheduled for 3 hours! Keron Thomas deceived his way to the train controls in 1993 and drove the train without being noticed, picking up passengers like they were expecting. However, a few stops short away from completing the route he took a corner too fast and caused the emergency breaks to activate; rendering him stuck until police apprehended him. Later in life he would be arrested for attempted murder, become an electrician and own a trucking company. 🤯
