The EU's Directive on Empowering Consumers in the Green Transition has now come into force, bringing tighter rules on environmental claims, ecolabels and product durability.

For UK businesses exporting to the EU, generic claims such as "eco" or "green" will need certified backing, and offset-based "climate neutral" claims are no longer permitted. With several Member States still finalising national legislation, careful monitoring will be essential.

The U.S.–Canada trade relationship has moved from tariffs to prohibitions, and it is worth watching from this side of the Atlantic.

From 29 September, the U.S. will ban imports of certain Canadian dairy products, motorcycles and mopeds, most alcoholic beverages and various molasses. It follows Canadian retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion in American goods and the collapse of bilateral negotiations in August.

Two points matter for UK businesses. First, organisations with North American operations should analyse whether Canadian-origin inputs feed any U.S.-bound production — the prohibition captures ingredients, not only finished goods. Second, Canada has signalled it is exploring a deeper relationship with the European Union, which could reshape transatlantic routing and sourcing over the coming years.

Cyber security has largely been treated as an internal control problem. Proposed amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill would make it a sourcing one.

Ministers would gain powers to require additional security measures from organisations in critical sectors — energy, healthcare, telecommunications — extending to phased withdrawal from designated vendors or a prohibition on acquiring their technology. The amendments remain subject to parliamentary approval.

The difficulty is concentration. More than 90 per cent of global solar panel manufacturing sits in China, which also dominates battery and electric vehicle supply. Alternatives exist, but they are more expensive and slower to qualify.

For anyone planning capital projects or replenishment cycles, there is groundwork worth doing now: map the chain beyond tier one, and model what a change of origin would mean for classification and duty exposure. Those consequences tend to surface months after the sourcing decision is made.

The EU's revamped packaging regulation came into force on 12 August, replacing rules that had been in place since the 1990s.

What applies immediately: EU-wide limits on PFAS in food-contact packaging, and a traceability requirement obliging manufacturers to provide information on where packaging originated.

What follows: a harmonised waste-sorting label in 2028, and in 2030, recyclability standards, reuse targets, restrictions on single-use formats, void-space limits, and mandatory deposit-return schemes for cans and plastic bottles.
