Super yacht rigs are under massive loads, particularly when pressed into race mode.

As part of major service, all critical metallic components should be properly inspected.

Marine Results are the go-to on this with fluorescent dye penetrant test lines in UK and Palma.

Reading the new draft AC38 protocol. 'cos that's the kind of guy I am. πŸ€“

One section leaps right out the page..... 😲

"The AC75 Class Rule shall specify six crew members, one of whom shall be a Youth (under
25 on the date of the first race of the Match) and one of whom shall be a female (without any
age restriction).
(e) Manual power input will not be permitted, except in steering, and the AC75 Class Rule will
allow power equivalent to that generated by four cyclors to be supplied to control sail functions
with a supplied battery-powered system. It is envisaged that this supplied power system will
mimic the capability of human cyclors in terms of average power output, peak power, fatigue,
and other relevant data enabling crews to determine how best to use the power available
during a race. Sailing data from AC37 will be used to quantify such power requirement."

Bye bye cyclors. Bye bye any athletic effort to sail AC boats. 😲

Having worked with these guys for a good few years in super yacht rig service and in NDT, these guys are the 'go to'. From planning to completion and sail trials, nothing is left to chance. πŸ‘‡

Marine Accident Investigations are very serious, extremely thorough and super in-depth reports on commercial marine accidents. The root causes of accidents are rarely the obvious one, but a series of combined events that result in the loss of the vessel and / or life at sea. They are often well worth reading as they will undoubtedly have some details that are relevant to your boating.

In this case, the prelim report into the sinking of SY Bayesian is stark for the speed at which things went from manageable to completely unrecoverable. Training and good drills are vital.

I have just completed a 2 day refresher at RNLI College in Poole where we train in a wide variety of emergency scenarios. We capsize and right the D-class and Atlantic 85, including swimming under the capsized boat in the dark. We also complete a full STCW Sea Survival course. Skills that we never want to use in real life, but are prepared for if we may need to.

Rebuilding some old Harken sheaves. New torlon rollers and delrin ball bearings and they are good as new.

The old tricks of having some shaving gel handy never leave you! 😎

Great service from my old friends at Harken UK. Airfreighted the parts from Harken USA over the weekend, and delivered up to me yesterday. πŸ‘

Sailing the Solo in light airs this week and one big issue on the job list......

Tighten JC Strap.

If you know, you know. 😎

Also, I am doing the RNLI Mayday Challenge. This May, me and my crew mates from Arran RNLI Lifeboat Station will be doing a mile everyday. Run, jog, walk, cycle or sail. Join us if you can, and click the link to sponsor us, and you too will be a lifesaver. πŸ“Ÿ πŸ›Ÿ

Thanks to my good friends at Harken UK for the bobble hat! Perfect Scottish May sailing kit addition. 😎

Right, admission time....

I was today years old when I figured out if I put a small drill hole in the instep of my trusty Gill Competition Boots, they would be easier to get off as it would release the vacuum...... πŸ€“

Only taken 30 years?! πŸ˜‚

A few bad weeks for the Cup. πŸ†

The Ratcliffe v Ainslie spat saw Ineos walk. πŸ₯Š
In New Zealand, Burling tried to out-gorilla the old silverback himself, Dalton, and lost. 🦍
And now Bertarelli pulls Alinghi. πŸ”š

That only means things are heating up.... πŸ”₯

Plans are being made, budgets honed, and sailors and sponsors locked in as we approach a venue announcement and the release of the Protocol.

A serious selection is occurring. Teams that are not 100% will fall away. You struggle to see how a start up can realistically enter at this level now without a solid 2-3 Cup approach, if 'B's' like Jim and Ernesto won't stomach it.

ETNZ, Athena, Luna Rossa, American Magic and Orient Express left.
Who's gonna make it over the next selection when it comes to cash on the table and entry fees, and who may surprise with a new team?

The America's Cup. The world's longest running soap opera! 😎

Now this is interesting..... An issue "in the bonding of the core material within the shear web" of several wings. Within the main element will be a transverse web. That is a major structural element.

Hmmm. Core bond failure between the likely very thin prepreg skins and the probably nomex or aluminium honeycomb core. 🧐

Probably a lot of NDT going on right now with traditional acoustic tapping as a course inspection and advanced ultrasonic methods to inspect the bond areas in detail.

That's going to be tricky to fix. Like working on the inside of a chimney.....

SailGP has officially called off its Rio de Janeiro event, originally slated for May 3–4, after uncovering a structural flaw in the wingsails of several the circuit's fleet of F50 yachtsβ€”a safety concern serious enough to bring the globe-trotting circuit to a sudden halt, five events into Season...
