Tring's Trains Productions started nearly 4 years ago as nothing more than a bit of fun, but has now grown to become something much more, with a following of over 200, and are tasking with making mini-documentaries about the work being undertaken at Stainmore Railway Company at Kirkby Stephen.

180 years ago today, on 1 July 1837, the ‘Thunderer’ locomotive was ordered by Brunel, and accepted by the Great Western Railway from Messrs R & W Hawthorn of Newcastle on 6 March 1838. The four 6ft diameter driving wheels were geared up in the ratio of 27:10. The engine and its 16” x 20” cylinders were separated from the boiler which was on a following six-wheeled vehicle. The driver was on the first ‘engine’ vehicle, the fireman on the second ‘boiler’ vehicle linked to the engine with ball and socket jointed pipes, and the third vehicle was the tender! This model of the locomotive, in 7mm : 1ft scale, is displayed in the Museum and Archive at Didcot Railway Centre. With little evidence to go on, the model maker has placed the driver on the footplate rather than the engine vehicle, where there doesn't appear to be much room to stand among the connecting rods and gear wheels.

The articulated locomotive described by some as more ‘like a procession’ was a complete failure and it ran for just 9,882 miles before being dismantled at the end of 1839. The boiler was re-used as a stationary engine and other parts were sold off. In some ways the concept anticipates the Beyer-Garratt locomotives which were built from the beginning of the 20th century onwards.

LNER Gresley A3 60103 'Flying Scotsman' made a triumphant and glorious return to service in February 2016, and crowds all over the world flocked to Britain to see the world-famous icon back in active service. Although usually clad in its instantly-recognisable LNER Apple Green, the decision was taken for 60103 to return in BR Brunswick Green livery, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was the first preserved line to host the reborn pacific.

Also running alongside the A3 was NYMR residents LMS Stanier Black 5MT 4-6-0 45428 'Eric Treacy' and BR Class 37 37264

The Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site is not just another train museum. Located on the site of the Laws Railroad station and rail yard, the land, 1883 depot and other buildings, and the last train, were donated to Inyo County and the City of Bishop by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1960. The museum is operated by the Bishop Museum and Historical Society under contract with those two agencies. The gift deed from the Southern Pacific Company to the county and city reads as follows: "In appreciation of the interest of Inyo County and the City of Bishop in preserving the memory of the Far West's last common carrier narrow gauge railroad, the Keeler Branch, Southern Pacific Company is pleased to donate steam locomotive No. 9 together with other rolling stock, and the Laws Station building and surrounding installations for safekeeping in behalf of generations to come."

At Laws the Slim Princess now stands in mute testimony to the time when the Owens Valley depended upon the railroad for its contact with other parts of the world.

At the time the railroad shut down its operations the village of Laws that grew up around the rail yard had disappeared. That village has been recreated by moving in historic buildings from around the Owens Valley and they now contain many artifacts and exhibits illustrating early life in the Owens Valley.

All in all, the Laws Railroad Museum is a real hidden gem, and if anybody happens to find themselves on highway 395, do take the time to take the small detour to the Museum; you won't regret it. Please support this museum, as it is a must visit, and needs as much support as they can get. Who knows, with enough will, No9 might steam into Laws once more...?
