Sandra Bullock is opening up about the fear she carries as a white mother raising two Black children. The actress says she is “uber paranoid” whenever her son Louis and daughter Laila leave home because, although they are her babies and the center of her life, strangers don’t know that when they see them—they simply see two Black teenagers. Bullock says she began teaching Louis about racism when he was only six, even explaining why wearing a hoodie could cause certain people to perceive him differently. She allows both children to see the realities of racism because she wants them prepared for a world she knows her fame and whiteness cannot shield them from. Bullock admits she sometimes wished their skin matched—not because she wanted them to be white, but because she wanted the world to recognize immediately that they belonged together. For her, loving Black children also means acknowledging their Blackness, understanding that their experiences will differ from hers and preparing them for dangers she has never personally had to face.
