Has anyone ever heard stories of galvanic corrosion and not believed how much damage it can cause to underwater gear ??

It’s imperative to check your anodes for wear and to be of the correct type of metal as a rough guide replace if less than 50% remains

So here’s some pictures of a very expensive stern thruster that had the anodes ignored as it’s “to expensive “ to have it lifted and checked
The entire stern thruster gear box has gone with just the shaft hung on the prop with one of the props gone to davey jones locker!!!
So get them checked 😁

The connection was removed and sure enough coolant dripped out ,in this case it had not been forced down the wire and after a simple replacement all seams well and all of the associated codes have disappeared.
As a peice of advice, if you have or know anyone with these engines a good idea is to remove the connection and check for dampness and whilst disconnected remove the green rubber seal so if it should fail in the future it will drip harmlessly which hopefully, would be spotted during engine checks and preventing the pressure to build forcing fluid into the loom .

Cummins QSB series engines

Here’s a problem which we were asked to have a look at after the owner had gone down the usual line of various repairer’s and spent not a inconsiderable amount of money to try and fix an annoying fault, in this case on a 2009 Cummins QSB5.9
Ok so the fault was that intermittently the “engine fault” code would pop up on the engine management screen but the engine was performing normally also soon after this started random faults to do with water in the fuel, which kept appearing which the last repairer had focused on,it was reported that the fuel system had been cleaned and sensors (all four!!) had been changed with no difference.
When we arrived we plugged in the diagnostic equipment and a large list of random unconnected faults where listed all of which had started to happen around the same time. The codes where cleared and after running the code which came back was to do with the coolant level sensor which with a reasonable amount of experience with these engines started to confirm my hunch. If a search of the internet is done you will find that although these engines are one of the best out there they do have some faults, one of which is that the level sensor starts to leak though where the connections are located which in severe cases can allow coolant to be forced down the loom to the ECU corroding terminals and costing a fortune to rectify. How , you may wonder can the fluid be forced down the wiring, well as the connection is sealed with a waterproof connector it not only stops outside contaminants getting in it also stops internal pressure getting out and as coolant is under pressure during operation it has nowhere to go

We had a professional drone company carrying out some filming during our last course and as we had a couple of great days of weather we are looking forward to glens results.

Watch this space for the results!!
