Mourne Flying Club

Mourne Flying Club Keeping you up to date with the flying activities in Mourne. Aughrim Airfield is situated at the heart of the Mourne Mountains.

It lies between two mountains, Knockcree (West) and Aughrim (East). The strip orientation is 17 and 35, it is 500yds long. Due to a significant upslope landing on 35 and takeoff on 17 is best advised. It is a friendly strip with several active aircraft. Derryogue (Kilkeel) is a 800m long runway 01/19 with clear approaches at both ends. Tea and coffee and toilets are located at both airfields and

very friendly with active flyers! If you fly around the Mournes at all, give us a call on 123.450, there might not always be someone on frequency; but it's good to know about other possible traffic in the vicinity. PPR is advised, so look us up in Pooleys, Aviators Guide to Ireland or Kevin Glynn's Flight Guide, or any other questions you can ask on this page.

The Kilkeel Fly-In was a fabulous success, with a superb turnout of aircraft of all shapes and sizes. From vintage taildraggers to sleek modern tourers, microlights to classics, the field was full of variety and there was something for every enthusiast to enjoy!

The undoubted star of the show was the Iolar - the beautiful de Havilland DH.84 Dragon, a flying piece of Irish aviation history dating back to Aer Lingus’s very first flight in 1936. Seeing her fly across the Mourne Mountains back drop was a moment of aviation beauty that no one will forget in a hurry, a real highlight for all of us. Thank you to for making our day so special.

And to the food… Absolutely amazing. Burgers, hotdogs, kippers, crab toes, chowder, desserts, buns, plenty of tea and of course Tayto! I suspect a few pilots needed to check their Mass and Balance before departure!

A massive thank you to the Nicholson family for hosting us so generously. Their hospitality made the day what it was, and we’re hugely grateful. And everyone else who took part, in any small way, it has not gone unnoticed - these events take a lot of work, and if it wasn’t for the members and their families and friends pulling together it couldn’t happen! Thank you!

Blue skies, full bellies, and the Dragon overhead - days don’t get much better than that at Kilkeel!
