Now we’ve all dried off after the rain yesterday, this is what we got up to over the weekend.

Saturday saw us doing a number of little jobs ready for the upcoming Mini Civil Week. We strimmed the grass back in the cess and around the area of the new channel before starting to install the plant crossing, which will be used by the digger to cross the track when required.

We also assisted the Works Train in rearranging the wagons in Oakworth Yard and sorted out the drainage pipe we had in storage in the yard ready for installation.

Sunday saw us brave the rain and wind and carry out some ballast bashing in the Haworth area, continuing to tidy up the section of mainline which runs past Haworth MPD.

Last night saw the first of many loads of materials being put in place ready for our Mini Civil Week, which starts a week on Monday.

This year’s job is to improve the drainage around the Oakworth area. Last night, we headed out and started placing bags of pea gravel along the cess in preparation for the work.

In total, 35-tonne bags of pea gravel will be used as part of this drainage project.

Keep your eyes on our page for regular progress updates as the work gets underway! 👀

Inspection Panel for the Grafton Crane

While the Grafton Steam Crane is currently at Haworth Sheds, the team who look after the crane have been working through a number of jobs.

One of the jobs currently being carried out is the renewal of the side sheets around the main slew ring and gearing.

As part of this work, the team have taken the opportunity to install an inspection panel. This will make future maintenance much easier, giving the team improved access to the main slew ring for regular greasing and inspection.

Thanks to Keith Bonner for the Pictures

It’s been a bit of a fencing kind of weekend for the gang!

Friday night we were out with D0226 on a test run, where we collected a number of packs of old sleepers and dropped them off at Oakworth ready for September’s Civil Week 2. These will be used for some plant crossings

Saturday and Sunday were then spent at Haworth making some adjustments to the fence line before carrying on with installing the wooden slats onto the fence which separates the Mainline from Haworth Yard

Sunday also saw a couple of the gang head out to Oakworth to replace a broken fishplate which had been reported by the Track Walkers during their Saturday inspection.

We’ve been a little quiet on Facebook recently, but rest assured the gangs have still been busy out and about!

Friday evenings have become our regular night for moving materials around the railway, with preparations underway for some upcoming jobs at Haworth. We’ve also been busy clearing up spoil and leftover stone from the recent walling job at Ingrow.

Today, the team have been back out at Haworth, installing the slats on the new fencing alongside Haworth MPD, as well as carrying out some ballast regulating around the Haworth area.

Our Grafton Steam Crane is currently at Haworth MPD undergoing some maintenance, with one of the key jobs being the replacement of its brake blocks.

As the crane runner wagon is a cut-down Southern PMV, it uses a rare type of brake block that we don’t hold in stock and is no longer readily manufactured unless you’re prepared to buy an entire pallet!

Thankfully, Richard Bentley, Operations Manager at the Watercress Railway, managed to track down a set for us and very kindly arranged for them to be couriered up to the Worth Valley.

A huge thank you to Richard and everyone at the Watercress Railway for their support.

🚂 Oxenhope Water Tank Update 🚂

Last week, the old Water Tank was removed from the end of the Oxenhope Platform; it was taken out of use and will now make way for a brand-new replacement. Fabrication of the new tank will take place over the summer, with installation scheduled for the autumn once our busy summer season is complete.

The new tank will closely replicate the original to preserve the feel of the station, while also providing an efficient and reliable water supply for our locomotives. The column will remain in place, and we'll begin cleaning and preservation work on its foundations this week.

Do you know where the Water column came from?

The Wall between Ingrow West Station and Victor Manufacturing has now been fully rebuilt and it’s safe to say it’s looking a lot better than it did before.

Big Thanks goes to Paul Clough Dry Stone Walling for rebuilding the wall and Victor Manufacturing for allowing us access to your car park while we completed the works.

Another busy Saturday for the gang today!

One team has been working in Victor’s Car Park at Ingrow, rebuilding the retaining wall that partially collapsed some time ago. We’ve demolished the remainder of the affected wall, along with a small additional section, to ensure that when it’s rebuilt there is no risk of the adjacent wall becoming unstable in the future.

Meanwhile, another gang has been hard at work at Haworth installing two new access gates. These will help prevent unauthorised access to the railway while still providing secure access points for our teams. Work has also continued on the new fence, with the installation of the timber slats now well underway to complete the project.
