A Highland impact that shaped the world?
New research reveals that a massive meteorite struck north-west Scotland around 990 million years ago—200 million years later than scientists once believed.
This cosmic collision left its mark in a layer of rock known as the Stac Fada Member, found right here in the Highlands. Even more incredible? The impact may have coincided with the emergence of early lifeforms—the distant ancestors of plants, animals, and fungi.
Led by the University of St Andrews and Curtin University in Australia, this groundbreaking study used tiny zircon crystals as time capsules to rewrite Earth’s geological timeline.
At Venture Highland, we’re always in awe of the stories buried in our landscape—from ancient meteorites to myths, legends, and natural wonders. There’s no better place to walk through deep time than right here in the Highlands.
Come and experience it for yourself. The past lives beneath your feet.
