DAY 49
Inverness to home.

Home by teatime.
Got a little bit emotional as we came past Tarbert and drove home towards Leverburgh.

Loved, LOVED, L O V E D being away and we've had the best experience imaginable but it's just so magical to be back home on this incredible island.

I think I've mentioned before that I've never, in my entire 67 years, lived in a house as long as I've lived in *this* house. THIS is home and I'm so very glad to be back.

Don't get me wrong, being glad to be home doesn't detract from any of the adventures, countries, cities and journeys we've been on. I don't regret a minute of it - but Dorothy was right....there's no place like home.

DAY 48 - leaving Belfast for Scotland.

Our 6 days in Belfast got reduced to just over 3 due to Storm Kathleen delays. We had to accept that we only had half the time here despite paying for a full 6 days of car hire and accommodation.
The concert that we were looking forward to seeing was also cancelled at the last minute so our final city trip was overshadowed with disappointment and bad weather.
We were already both a bit sullen because it's the end of our trip so I don't think we really did Northern Ireland justice. We tried to cram too much in to half the amount of time.

It's a glorious calm and sunny Sunday morning for our Stenaline sailing back into Scotland.
Our journey from Stranraer to Inverness will be the trickiest train journey of all with 4 changes and a bus and a 240 mile journey taking us about 8 hours.
Welcome home.

DAY 45 - The Giant's Causeway.

10/04/2024

DAY 44
We've left Europe ....as sad today as it was in June 2016.

Our 18 hour crossing turned into 27.5 sea voyage of Biblical proportions.
From trying to leave France to finally arriving at our accommodation in Portaferry, about 20 miles east of Belfast, Monday and Tuesday were truly horrible. Everything fell apart, plans were scuppered, no-one was helpful, people were obstructive, the weather was terrifying and I was ready to go home.

The ferry journey was a shambles. No information made sense, email updates were different from text updates, it left 20 hours later than scheduled and took 9.5 hours longer. NINE AND A HALF HOURS !!
We sailed into the Irish Sea in a Force 10 gale after the ferry hugged the coastline of Cornwall to try and stay in the lee of Storm Kathleen and apparently the ferry zig-zagged its way through waves and troughs being hurled up into the air and slapping back down. It was terrifying being on that boat. The noise and lurching was like nothing I've ever experienced. It wasn't just unpleasant it was totally frightening. And there was ZERO communication about the delays, only paid for internet - FIFTEEN POUNDS FOR FOUR HOURS - and because of the weather even that kept dropping.

Trying to inform fooking.com about late arrivals for accommodation and late pick ups for hire vehicles felt like a punishment for using budget options. Fooking.com's Customer Service is horrendously inadequate at best and pointless & indifferent most of the time.

Trying to do the above with very expensive failing internet and no ability to phone was soul destroying.

Moaning about hugely expensive town centre hotels, late taxis, cold, wet wind and more fooking.com antics doesn't actually convey the frustration, tiredness and unpleasantness of the last 48 hours on a bread based diet punctuated with a bag of liquorice torpedoes.

On the upside.. I haven't met an Irish person yet who isn't unfailingly cheerful and helpful, utterly friendly and completely wonderful. Thank gawd the reputation of Da Oirish is completely true. We've had delicious cod&chips&currysauce&mushypeas, found a fabulous off-licence, had our car upgraded to a VW Golf to compensate for the issues and finally watched the semi-final and final of The Great Pottery Throwdown.

Tomorrow - The Giant's Causeway.

If anyone is so inclined, you might be able to follow our
s l o w progress from France to Ireland via The Marine Traffic AIS app.

The normally 18 hour crossing is now approaching it's 20th hour.
Our ETA into Dublin is 15.15 despite leaving Cherbourg before 3pm yesterday.

We're on the ferry called WB Yeats.

This is brilliant ... the pilot boat finishing guiding us put of the harbour and around the barriers....

DAY 42 ...Cherbourg to Dublin.

Yesterday's delayed ferry is battling its way through Portland, Plymouth, Lundy, Irish Sea in a very loud and creaky, rocking, juddering boat.
It's not very pleasant.
Luckily we've got a cabin and a telly to try and take our minds off it. First time we've watched any kind of telly for 6 weeks or so.

It's been sad saying goodbye to mainland Europe. Looking forward to exploring Northern Ireland next.

EMBUSCADE

New drink of choice - beer cocktail.

Calvados, white wine, cassis, lemon and blonde beer.

This meets with my absolute approval.

(Did I mention it comes in a half pint glass with no namby pamby straw or ice-cubes to dilute it?)

DAY 41 Cherbourg

An extra day here because of Storm Kathleen.
It's a really nice town with A Brewery Quarter so lots of good beer.
There's a massive visitor centre La Cité de la Mer which was a splendid day out exploring loads of submarines and Europe's biggest aquarium.
There's also a huge Italian traveling fairground in town.
Ferry sails tomorrow afternoon and we'll be disembarking in Dublin about 9am on Tuesday morning.
