Today I visited the beautiful island of Iona for the very first time, and I can completely understand why it is often described as a “thin place” where the distance between heaven and earth feels somehow smaller.
Steeped in history, spirituality, and breathtaking scenery, Iona has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. In 565 AD, Saint Columba founded a monastery here after arriving from Ireland, and from this tiny island Christianity spread throughout much of Scotland.
Walking around the island today felt incredibly special. Ancient standing stones, weathered by centuries of wind and sea, sit amongst white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and sweeping coastal views that almost don’t seem real. Every corner of Iona feels peaceful, timeless, and deeply connected to the past.
To reach the island, I took the short ferry crossing from Fionnphort to Iona, which takes around 10 minutes, but it truly feels like stepping into another world.
Lunch was enjoyed at Argyll Hotel after a local recommendation, because it’s always best to speak to the locals!
I’m already looking forward to bringing guests here in just a few short weeks and sharing the magic, history, and beauty of this incredible island.
