The Port of Cromarty Firth has committed £10,000 in match funding towards an exciting new community project aiming to create a creative wellbeing centre in the Highlands.

Led by Flip of the Coin SCIO , the project will create a safe and welcoming space focused on creativity, connection and community wellbeing.

The funding commitment has been made on the basis that the remaining project funding can be secured, and we’re pleased to support the campaign by helping raise awareness of the fundraiser.

Projects like this have the potential to create a lasting positive impact within communities across the Highlands, helping provide support, opportunities and connection for people who may need it most.

This week, for World Oceans Day, the Port of Cromarty Firth joined the crew of Rotterdam (Holland America Line) for a beach litter pick 🌊

Sixteen crew members and eight Port staff spent an hour clearing Invergordon beach. At the Port, we like to get involved in beach cleans, and today everyone worked together to pick up litter and help keep the coastline clean and tidy.

A huge thank you to the crew of Rotterdam for reaching out and organising the litter pick, and to everyone who took part.

The Cromarty Firth is home to one of the UK’s most recognisable sea ducks, the Common Eider 🦆

If you’ve spotted groups of ducks gathering together across the Firth recently, there’s a good chance you’ve been seeing eiders. We have 75 active nests on site this year, which was confirmed in recent bird monitoring.

During the summer months, the Firth becomes especially important for these birds. Mother eiders gather together with their ducklings in large protective groups known as “crèches”, helping keep the young birds safer while out on the water.

At the same time, adult eiders begin their summer moult, temporarily losing the ability to fly as they replace their feathers, making sheltered environments like the Cromarty Firth incredibly important.

Male eiders are easy to recognise with their striking black and white feathers and pale green markings, while females use their mottled brown colouring to camouflage during nesting season.

From Udale Bay and Nigg Bay to the waters around Cromarty and the Sutors, the Firth supports an incredible variety of birdlife and marine species throughout the year, with many areas protected as Ramsar sites and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

It’s a reminder of just how important the Cromarty Firth is, not only for industry and infrastructure, but for the wildlife that calls it home too.

The Port of Cromarty Firth has donated £2,500 to the Invergordon Development Trust to support the next phase of the Inchindown project, helping preserve and share one of the Highlands’ most remarkable hidden wartime sites.

Originally built during World War II, the vast underground Inchindown oil tanks played a vital role in supporting military ships arriving into the Cromarty Firth.

The latest funding will help enhance the project’s immersive VR experience, making this important piece of local history more accessible for future visitors and generations.
