This is Robert Kukla’s first UK - based company and also the largest of its subsidiaries in terms of investment and potential. New managing director, Steve Wood, along with three other senior staff, Lynda Simms (Commercial Director), Martin Jacobs (Operations Director) and Hannah Webb (General Manager) were until recently part of one the industry’s leading w**e and beverage logistics providers and they have brought a wealth of industry and personal experience to the new company.

Did you know? The numbers and symbols on shipping containers tell an important story.

Every freight container carries markings that help identify it, establish its specifications and support safe handling throughout its journey.

A container's unique identification number, for example, consists of four letters followed by seven digits.

But what do they mean?
✔️Owner code: Three letters identifying the registered owner or operator.
✔️Equipment category: A letter indicating the type of equipment.
✔️Serial number: Six digits identifying the individual container.
✔️Check digit: A final digit used to help detect identification errors.

Other markings provide information about container dimensions, maximum gross weight and safety certification.

For businesses moving beverages internationally, understanding container specifications is part of effective shipment planning, from equipment selection to loading and onward transport.

For bonded movements, the customs position is part of the transport plan.

Where goods move under duty suspension, the customs and excise arrangements, documentation and physical movement need to stay aligned before collection.

This becomes especially relevant when a shipment is tied to a terminal slot, warehouse appointment or onward connection. If the customs position or documentation is incomplete or incorrect, the impact can quickly move beyond paperwork and into the transport schedule.

Kukla Customs Division team helps customers put the appropriate procedures and documentation in place before the goods move, keeping compliance and transport aligned throughout the movement.

Freight reliability improved in Q2. The operating environment did not necessarily get easier.

The Kukla Beverage Logistics Q2 2026 Market Update is now available, looking at what changed across road, sea, rail and air freight, and what those developments meant in practice for beverage supply chains.

What caught our eye this week: more rail freight capacity could mean more options for UK supply chains.

A new UK target aims to increase rail freight by at least 40% by 2040, with a longer-term ambition of 75% growth by 2050.

For importers and exporters, the practical point is greater choice.

More rail capacity could support multimodal planning, strengthen inland connections from ports and terminals and provide additional options alongside road freight.

For freight customers, greater choice across transport modes can support more flexible and resilient supply chains.

Port delays are not isolated events.
Good planning can reduce the knock-on impact across the rest of the shipment.

Recent data cited in a Port Congestion Report released on 1 September shows average waiting times of around 1.6 days at Felixstowe and 1.56 days at Southampton.

For importers and exporters, this can affect much more than the vessel schedule. Delays can create knock-on pressure on collection windows, driver planning, warehouse bookings and onward delivery.
That is why contingency planning is so important.

Port delays cannot always be avoided, but their wider impact can be reduced through early planning, realistic scheduling and clear communication.

Every supply chain ultimately depends on people.

During Driver Health Week, we at Kukla Beverage Logistics are recognising the professional drivers who keep goods moving across the UK.

According to Logistics UK, 80% of UK freight travels on the road network at some point, while the UK truck fleet covers more than 300 million miles every week.

Behind those figures are drivers spending long hours on the road, often with limited opportunities to exercise and varying access to suitable rest facilities and healthy food.

Supporting driver wellbeing is therefore not only a people issue. It also matters for retention, resilience and the reliable movement of goods.

Driver Health Week is highlighting practical support around nutrition, fitness, sleep and wellbeing, while also calling for better facilities for professional drivers across the UK.

At Kukla, we recognise the essential role drivers play in keeping supply chains moving every day, as well as the importance of regular breaks during long journeys for their safety and those around them on the road.

Driver Health Week runs from 1–6 September.
