Carousels are for community 🫶

I love making reels on this account, but sometimes all of the excitement of the videos make it hard to focus on little moments captured in photos 📸

Please enjoy my scrapbook selection from this weekend - it was full of good chats, puppy snuggles, and cups of tea. 🐶☕️

Hope you all had a great weekend, and an even better week ahead! 🗓️

So I wanted to change it up a bit!!

It feels funny only making reels on this account when there are so many other possibilities 📸

Felt like creating virtual scrapbook pages would give me the joy of a scrapbook with a lot less effort 😂

And weekends with friends in the lakes feel scrapbook-worthy, so that’s what we’re gonna do! 📔🫶

Do any of you make physical scrapbooks? Is it fun or kinda a lot of work? ⬇️

Personally I live for a checklist ✔️

If you know what kinds of scenes you’re looking for, but don’t know the actual areas in the UK - I got you! 🫶🗺️

I feel like in England, everyone knows that the Cotswolds are the place to go for traditional dreamy cottages and cute little villages 🏠

But I had never heard of the area prior to moving here! 🤯

So I’m going to share these lil posts for you all to save when planning your British adventures! 🇬🇧📌

Make sure to follow for more of these holiday recommendations and feel free to ask any questions in the comments ⤵️🇬🇧

A new fave place in London?!

📍Columbia Road Flower Market -

I had high expectations for the flower market, but this morning’s adventure past the stalls and into the quirky, often plant-related, stores was a perfect Sunday activity. 💐

👀 It would have been dangerous for my wallet too if I didn’t have a long trip back to York!

TOP TIP: the market begins winding down between
1-2pm, and you can get a little cheekier with your bartering. The deals are already pretty good, but the vendors want to get those last sales in before packing up. 🤑

Highly recommend checking this market out - I bet it will only get more beautiful as the spring and summer months come along! 🌷

Make sure to save this post for your next London visit, and follow for more UK destinations and tips 🫶🇬🇧

I’ve been going back and forth on this for a while…

But it seems like the right direction to take. 🙌

When I first launched I had a bunch of international trips set up, but maintaining this broad focus on world travel has become more difficult as I get deeper into my PhD. 📚

I want to share more personal details about adjusting to living abroad and about the weekend UK trips I take, without worrying that it’s not ~exotic~ enough. 🥾🏰

I want to show up more authentically and share when I accidentally expose myself as an foreigner (usually when I start speaking, but there’s other things too). 🙈

I’m really excited to revamp this account and make it more of a lens into my experiences and adventures. 🇬🇧

Hopefully you’re excited to see what’s coming too! 🤞The new color scheme is inspired by a particular region of the UK that I’m a fan of - can you guess?? 🤔

I’m not normally the gal who skips all the autumn and winter events to get Christmassy, but let me tell you…the Brits know how to do Christmas and I’m looking forward to it. 🎅🏼

Imagine that you don’t really go big for Halloween and Thanksgiving isn’t a thing. That’s the situation the people of the UK found themselves in. No Fourth of July either. These people prepare for Christmas since the last big holiday, so - Easter? 🐣

Lots of pent up holiday energy so they go big for Christmas. Christmas markets start soon, holiday decor is going up, and England means business. 🎄

My five favorite things about “festive season” in England, ranked:
1. Christmas markets 🌭
2. Christmas tree selection 🌲
3. Boxing Day, because why not have another holiday involved 🥊
4. Holiday time traditions (this will have to be a whole different post, but personally, I’m not convinced by the Christmas cake 🙈)
5. Mulled wine & hot chocolate ☕️

Have you ever thought about how your movement impacts others’ lives? Stay with me now… ➡️

🧳

As an archaeologist (for those who are new here, hi I’m an archaeologist!), I find evidence we leave behind fascinating. When you leave behind a certain kind of grave or piece of trash, it can be seen as a tiny time capsule view into your life. 🔬

I was thinking about this tonight, as my roommate and I ordered some pho and talked about how we wouldn’t have eaten sweet chili sauce prior to moving to England because it’s not used in much cuisine that we ate at home. 🍜

When I first moved to England, I had never had curry before. 😱 After a year in the UK, I went home and began to incorporate curries into our family meal planning. Believe it or not, this kind of cultural exchange makes an impact in the archaeological record!

What if people from home, who I made food I learned to cook in England, started cooking it more regularly and served it to their friends and then it branches out from there?

Maybe it’s curry, maybe it’s a Sunday roast, maybe fish and chips…when you move abroad you are adapting to a new culture and you can share that with others back at home. You’re making an impact in your little communities and that’s neat! 🙌

Alright, time to settle a big debate…

🧳

Autumn or fall?

This one has been popping up a lot lately with my British friends as Fall just isn’t really a season name here. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s one of those things that I thought was interchangeable based on what we learned in school, but autumn always felt like the ~fancy~ way of saying fall. 🍂 Anyone else?

Pros of fall:
•makes sense for kids, as leaves fall
•less syllables

Pros of autumn:
•fun to say autumnal
•feels fancy

I’m so intrigued as to what countries other than the US/UK say and also if anyone in the US goes for autumn?? 🍁

It’s not goodbye, it’s see ya later! 👋🏻

🧳

I’m the friend who commits to this cheesy phrase, as big goodbyes aren’t really my thing.

Part of it probably comes from the fact that for 10 years of my life, as a summer camp kid/counselor, I would see some of my best friends for 3 weeks a year. 🏕 I knew we would all come back the next year, and 365 days really flies by. 🗓

I was lucky to have a friend from home come and visit me in York this weekend, and found it really easy to settle into where things left off. We would ask questions about the details of the time we’ve missed out on, but generally we had kept in touch enough to know about the big moments.

It’s kind of a way of life at this point to have a lot of cheerful hellos and somber goodbyes, but I truly do think I will see everyone again when our paths cross. 😌

Anywho, Move Abroad Mondays seem to often become a bit of sharing of my expat thoughts, but I hope you nomads understand the ramblings. 🥾

Got in front of the camera in York for once - was showing around my office scenes! 📷

Is there any part of your life that set you up well for living a life abroad/on the go? Would love to hear about it!

Dates & Time - England Edition 🇬🇧

🧳

📆 Recently the concept of weekends came up…when thinking about Saturday and Sunday, do you picture them on a calendar next to each other, on the far right of the week (some British calendars do this) or on either end of the weekdays?

We launched into a whole discussion around whether Sunday was the end of the week or the beginning of a new week, but that’s besides the point. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Besides the calendar layout, there’s also the way people write the date. Does it take a minute to adjust to the dd/mm/yy format? For sure. I definitely have to think for a minute and it definitely helps if the day is a number after 12 to clarify things.

Another difference is that military time is often used here, and yeah, I can handle the math, but sometimes it takes a minute. ⌚️

What if I get it wrong and miss a meeting? 13:00 looks suspiciously like 3:00 if you’re not paying attention 😅

I feel like I’ve never touched on these little things that remind me that I am still adjusting to a new culture. They’re easy to adapt to, but still take some time! I think after a year, I’m just now getting used to thinking in military time.
