What are the benefits of stretch wrap over shrink wrap for secondary packaging?

Here's why FMCG manufacturers should consider making the switch 👇

Lower running costs ✅
As there is no heat in the stretch wrapping process, savings of over 90% can be made on electricity costs compared to shrink wrapping.

Lower carbon emissions ✅
With no heat in the process and the ability to use thinner films, stretch wrapping reduces carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to energy-intensive heat tunnels. Biodegradable or compostable films can also be used.

Cardboard weight reduction ✅
For many products, there is no need for the addition of a cardboard tray as stretch wrap machines can wrap without them and create a pack that is robust for transit. This significantly reduces cardboard usage.

Faster line speeds ✅
Unlike shrink tunnels that must run at a constant speed, stretch wrappers can be sped up or slowed down to suit production requirements and targets.

Consistent pack quality ✅
With no heat in the process, stretch wrapping provides a much more consistent pack quality, unlike shrink wrapping which is prone to inconsistencies such as blistering caused by the high temperature.

Conformance to environmental legislation ✅
The significant reduction in energy usage and carbon emissions mean that stretch wrapping is a far superior choice in helping manufacturers to conform to environmental legislation and avoid high environmental taxes such as Climate Change Levy and the Plastics Tax.

Less packaging tax ✅
The plastic packaging tax took effect on 1st April 2022 with £200 per metric tonne charged for plastic packaging which doesn't contain at least 30% recycled content. Plus, the new Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging (EPR), commonly known as the Grocery Tax, begins this year and requires producers to bear the full costs associated with managing packaging waste. Stretch wrapping uses less of everything so significantly reduces the impact of these taxes.

We're pleased to be included in this month's issue of Machinery Update magazine as part of their ready meals and convenience foods feature. 👏

Having worked with UK food producers for many years, we're experienced at providing sustainable secondary packaging solutions for convenience foods packaged in cartons, trays, jars, tins, pouches, and more.

We understand the challenges that food producers face when striving to reduce high energy costs. Replacing their energy-guzzling heat shrink tunnels is the obvious solution, but without a payback option, they’re simply unable to justify it.

But, by switching to stretch wrapping the savings potential from reduced electricity and film usage means payback can be achieved in as little as 18 months.

For example, a typical FMCG application, replacing a heat shrink tunnel with a stretch wrap machine, generates around £30k savings per year, producing a healthy return on investment and a reduction in plastic use of anything from 40% up to 70%.

Extended Producer Responsibility fee payments starting in October 2025 📆

Although the outlook for UK manufacturing is expected to be brighter this year, industry analysts predict that producers will continue to be challenged with rising costs throughout 2025.

In addition to increases in National Insurance and the National Living Wage, both of which come into effect in April, the first payments for the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging are due in October, deferred from 2024.

Under the EPR, producers will be charged a fee per tonne of packaging material used, with different packaging types attracting a set fee based on their environmental impact. Packaging types that are easily recycled will be charged at a lower fee per tonne than those that are more difficult to recycle.

One way that manufacturers can minimise their EPR payments is by changing their secondary packaging solutions.

Traditional shrink wrap solutions rely on very thick films that add packaging weight. Revolutionary stretch wrap technology, however, doesn't require heat in the process, which enables thinner films to be used, thereby reducing packaging weight.

By switching to sustainable stretch wrapping, manufacturers can reduce plastic usage by up to 70% and benefit from 100% recyclable or compostable films - 2 positive steps towards reducing EPR fees.
