ADR - What is Class 8?

Class 8 means corrosives.

These are substances that cause irreversible damage to skin or can cause damage to goods or the means of transport. Don’t confuse these with irritants, which cause inflammation of skin and other tissue but this then can reverse back to normal afterwards, while corrosives destroy the skin tissue.

Corrosives can be liquid or solids and are a very common classification for chemicals.

Examples include lots of acids, alkalis, bleach (such as hypochlorite) and wet filled batteries.

The Hazchem Network carries corrosives through our transport network.

Correct Freight Presentation
Ensuring your items are securely packaged and presented appropriately is crucial to their safe travel from consignor to consignee. Here are some important guidelines to follow:
• Pallet quality – Is the pallet “fit for purpose”
Ensure there are no protruding nails
Pallet base should be good condition
Consider using cardboard to cover the base
• Is the freight securely banded or wrapped to the pallet base?
The product should not overhang the pallet.
Stack the load correctly
Load the pallet evenly (i.e. not one side heavy)
• Ensure the consignment weight is declared correctly.
• Whenever a package has orientation arrows, ensure the arrows are always pointing upwards.
• Consider the ‘Centre of Gravity’ of loads
• Label consignments clearly with the appropriate hazardous labels to ensure compliance.
• Ensure gas cylinders DO NOT overhang the pallet if horizontal and valve guards MUST be fitted.

ADR - What is Class 7?

Class 7 means radioactive material.

The Hazchem Network does not carry radioactive material through our transport network.

Radioactive means that the material contains a radionuclide that is capable of giving off radiation at an activity level as defined in ADR. This varies depending on the specific isotope in question.

What is an ADR Licence and Who Needs One?
To transport dangerous goods by road, drivers must undergo specific training to obtain an ADR licence. This licence ensures that all parties involved in the transport process understand the regulations and safety procedures associated with ADR transport.
To obtain an ADR licence, drivers must meet specific criteria, including:
• Minimum age: drivers must be at least 21 years old.
• Experience: minimum of one year’s experience in driving large goods vehicles (LGVs).
• Medical fitness: valid medical certificate proving the driver is fit to handle hazardous materials.
Categories of ADR Licence
There are different categories on the ADR licence depending on the type of goods being transported:
• Tanks: for transporting liquid or gaseous hazardous substances in bulk.
• Packages: for transporting packaged dangerous goods.
Each category requires specific training and certification, ensuring drivers are fully prepared to handle the materials they transport.
Explosives and radioactive materials normally need additional training to have them included on the license .

Automated PODs
Hazchem’s hub system can generate PODs using electronic data captured by the driver at the delivery point meaning customers can obtain PODs almost instantaneously.
No waiting for the driver to get back to the depot and waiting for the POD to be scanned and uploaded. The automated POD includes the name, date, time and signature of the person that took the delivery. This is in addition to GPS and photo on delivery.

ADR - What is Class 6.1?

Class 6.1 means toxic substances.

These are materials that in relatively small quantities can cause damage to human health or even death. This can be by exposure through inhalation, skin absorption or ingestion.

How toxic a substance is can be measured and that leads to some products being classed as highly toxic, toxic or slightly toxic.

Examples include arsenic, cyanide's , various mercury compounds and ni****ne.

Cyanide's are probably best known for being used by spies during the Cold War – think James Bond!

The Hazchem Network carries a lot of toxics through our transport network. However, there are a number of substances that are not permitted due to them being deemed to require dedicated transport for safety reasons.

Here at The Hazchem Network hub in Hinckley we are in the process of testing an innovative new FLT (Forklift Truck) based scanning solution. The integration of FLT barcode scanning with real-time photo documentation of pallets as they move through the supply chain will help improve accuracy, increase efficiency and maximize floorspace by removing static scanning points currently in use.
These photos, combined with the photos on delivery, create a comprehensive visual record of each pallet's journey through the network from consignor to consignee. This can be valuable for both internal quality control and for external customer service.
Look out for more updates on this as we progress through the testing.
