When the winter weather hits the UK, it's a great time to get your suspension serviced. This Trek Fuel is in to have both the fork and shock serviced at TF Tuned and new bearings pushed into the suspension pivots. The Bike Doctor uses TF Tuned as they are accredited by all the major suspension brands. Often your fork and shock come back from them better than when they were new. The Bike Doctor has a great relationship with TF Tuned and has all the bearing tools required to ensure replacement pivot bearings are fitted accurately and without damage, whilst your suspension is away being serviced. Had a great job last week ... A regular customer asked me to service a 10 year old Giant Defy with a very tired 105 mechanical drivetrain and some horrific cable-operated disc brakes. Being a Shimano trained and accredited dealer, I was able to offer him the latest groupset deals from Shimano on the Di2 electronic gear change system and hydraulic disc brakes. (Yes, even Shimano are in trouble and offering fantastic deals at the moment!) The customer was delighted as he's got a virtually new bike in terms of moving parts but was able to stick with the frame he knows and loves. The Bike Doctor was at the Shimano annual trade show at the Manchester Velodrome last week, keeping up to date with all the latest tech releases from Shimano. Cues drivetrain is the big push at the moment. It's claimed to give 2 to 3 times better durability for a very small compromise in shift quality, which makes it a great upgrade for all bikes but especially eBikes. The Bike Doctor has completed all the Shimano Cues training and is ready to upgrade your eBike at his unit workshop right next to the entrance of Helmsley Walled Garden !

Regular brake flushing (with new fluid) and bleeding is critical to brake performance. Ideally it should be done every year for DOT fluid systems (Sram, Hope, etc.) but you can probably get away with a little longer for mineral oil based systems (Shimano, Magura, etc.)
This Campagnolo mineral oil system certainly needed flushing; just look at the difference between the fresh red Campagnolo fluid going in at the calliper and the black fluid coming out at the lever.

Older MTBs with 26" diameter tyres are still good bikes! In roughly 2013 MTBs with 27.5" tyres started coming out and in roughly 2019 MTBs with 29" tyres really started to catch on. However, MTBs with 26" tyres have some significant advantages; they tend to be much lighter and the lower rotational inertia of smaller wheels means they accelerate quicker and can handle better in some types of riding. Weight was the most important factor for the owner of this 2009 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert so rather than buy a new MTB, he got me to update his much-loved 'Stumpy'. Modern 1x drivetrains are so much better and lighter than the old 3x9 systems that were supplied with this bike, but they can be adapted to fit older bikes. Throw in some new Hope wheels and Shimano brakes and you've got a seriously good MTB that probably no modern MTB could match in terms of weight.

There are 3 important bearings to worry about on a bike if you want to minimise friction and go as fast or far as possible. The front and rear wheel bearings are fairly easy to check just by spinning the wheels and rocking them from side-to-side to makes sure there's no play. The third one is the set of bottom-bracket bearings. It's not easy to check them without removing the chain, so it's best to make sure they're assembled correctly in the first place. One of the key things is to be certain the face of the frame is clean and square to the threads so that when you tighten the bearings cups, they don't distort and increase the bearing friction. The photo shows a bottom bracket facing tool cleaning up the face of the frame. The Bike Doctor in Helmsley has got all the right tools to make sure your bike is put together properly.
