British Airways has just made it a whole lot easier to arrive closer to base camp at Kilimanjaro and to pair a mountain climb or Tanzanian safari with proper beach time.

From 29th May 2027, BA will fly three times a week straight from Gatwick to Kilimanjaro, continuing on to Zanzibar so no more routing through Dar es Salaam and losing half a day to connections.

The Boeing 777 service runs through to the end of October, with fares starting at £849 return across Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller. For a route like this, that’s a genuinely useful spread of options depending on how you want to spend those extra hours in the air.

Why does this matter if you’re planning a Tanzania trip? Anyone who has climbed Kili will tell you that the internal flight could be a tiring challenge in itself. Now you land in Kilimanjaro for the mountain range, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, then carry straight on to Zanzibar’s white sand and slower pace, all on the same ticket. Two destinations, two holidays in one, with a trusted carrier taking you to the heart of where you want to be.

Never underestimate the importance of your downtime, and a fortnight split between game drives and the Indian Ocean is about as good as it gets.

Overwhelm shows up early in holiday planning - usually somewhere between picking a destination and opening fifteen browser tabs comparing resorts, destinations and travel dates.

After 23 years of doing this for a living, I’ve learnt the way through it isn’t more research. It’s better questions.

How do you actually want to feel when you’re there? When does this trip need to fit around school terms, work, or a birthday that matters? Who is part of this trip and what kind of personality fit do we need? How much of the planning do you want to be part of, and how much do you want off your plate entirely? And why this trip, right now - what’s it really for and why is that important for you?

When we spend time considering the answers to these I can really get to the good part; researching the destinations, the pace, how much luxury you actually need to switch off.

That’s personalised travel planning at its best - not the view from the villa, but the conversation that happens before a single flight gets booked. Planning starts to feel effortless, even enjoyable, once someone else is asking the right things.

I recently put together a 13-day, multi-generational escape for a family of five in Nicaragua. What can seem effortful and uncertain when you’re planning for yourself is exactly where my experience as a travel consultant makes everything easy.

I planned the first five nights in Granada. A guided walking tour through the old streets and a cigar factory, a morning kayaking the 365 tiny islets of Las Isletas, and a hike up Mombacho Volcano finishing with canopy zip-lining and a hands-on chocolate workshop. One evening was spent at the rim of Masaya’s active crater after dark, watching for the glow within - genuinely one of the more dramatic things I’ve arranged.

Then seven nights on the Pacific coast at an eco-luxury surf resort, all-inclusive, with a daily surf session built in for anyone who fancied it and a boat trip along the way.

After 23 years in luxury travel, here’s what I know for certain: it’s always changing and I learn more with every trip I take - and it’s a bug you can’t shake!

I grew up in York and fell into travel almost by accident, chasing a job that would let me see more of the world. Twenty-three years on, it still doesn’t feel like work.

Travel is something you understand the more you do it. The nuances between travel in Japan and South Korea. The travel routes through African countries and cities that are the easiest. The places that you’ll miss if you don’t know that you have to pre-book well in advance.

There’s no substitute for first-hand experience (which I have by the bucket load!), and I’d rather give you my honest opinion than a brochure’s glossy overview.

I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all luxury. Your idea of the perfect trip and your neighbour’s might look nothing alike, and that’s exactly the point. My job is finding your version, then making the fiddly bits - the transfers, the itinerary, the connections on the ground seamlessly fall into place for you.

Great travel comes from confidence in the planning, places and the person who understands what you’re looking for.

Kicking yourself for missing Monaco F1 this year? Here’s the good news - bookings for Explora I at the 2027 Monaco Grand Prix just opened, and this time you get first pick.

Explora Journeys has an exclusive berth in Monte Carlo marina again, right through the Grand Prix. This luxury liner feels like the hotels lining the harbour but with a unique twist.

Things that make a glass of w**e even more enjoyable?

If you’re anything like me you might enjoy sampling local w**es whilst you’re travelling.

I was looking for the name of a specific w**e I enjoyed on a holiday and found myself searching my photo albums for the label (it was FELICITÉ, an unoaked chardonnay from a trip to Grootbos in South Africa, which I highly recommend for so many reasons!)
It was during this search when I realised just how many of the most amazing views around the world I’ve enjoyed with a moment of peace and a glass of w**e.

I asked my friends to share some of their most memorable ‘w**e and travel’ moments and it seems many of us have found the most incredible vistas while savouring a Sauvignon (or Chenin, Malbec, Beaujolais…)
