Port of London Authority We look after the tidal Thames, the UK’s biggest port. Social media not monitored 24/7. At the PLA we oversee operations on the tidal Thames.

The 95 miles of river is home to: the UK's second biggest port; busiest inland waterway for passengers and freight; a valued marine environment; and a centre for sports and leisure activities.

🐝 A refuge for the UK’s rarest bumblebee

The Thames Estuary is believed to be home to the last remaining UK stronghold of the Shrill Carder Bee, making it one of the country’s most important landscapes for bumblebee conservation.

Through the PLA Environment Fund, we’re supporting the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s ‘Seawalls for Bumblebees’ project to understand why these incredibly rare bees continue to thrive here and how their habitat can be protected for the future.

And their home might not be where you’d expect🌼

The estuary’s flower-rich seawalls, sitting alongside ports, industry and flood defences, provide an important habitat for rare bumblebees and a remarkable variety of other pollinators.

Conservation specialists and trained volunteers are surveying these habitats to build a clearer picture of where rare species are found and the conditions they need to thrive.

The fourth annual Safe Boarding Week is coming up next week (14-20 September).

This safety initiative enables the PLA to gather useful information that can support addressing common issues and deficiencies around safe access.

Watch out for our teams up and down the tidal Thames who are taking part next week!

Earlier today, a group of skilled swimmers took part in swimming 10K along the River Thames in a carefully choreographed and planned event, to ensure their safety in taking on the first Swim London Event 🏊

In parallel, the PLA has announced £10,000 of funding to support community swimming lessons for young people in London, Essex and Kent to boost water confidence.

Sian Foster, PLA Director for Corporate Affairs:

"It has been heartbreaking to see so many people losing their lives in the UK’s waterways this year, and we have campaigned to help highlight the dangers of entering the tidal Thames and the importance of understanding water safety. That these athletes, all excellent swimmers, need so much planning, preparation and support to swim in the Thames safely, shows just how dangerous it can be.

“We’re pleased to have worked so closely with the Swim London team in preparing for this event and are meeting their 10k challenge with our own £10k offer. By offering £10,000 for swimming lessons and water confidence programmes we hope to give more people the skills they need to stay safe around water and build a lifelong confidence and love of it."

This year’s Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race! 🚣🏅

A fantastic afternoon on the river, supporting one of the worlds oldest sporting events since 1715.

Congratulations to Callum Howard, this year’s winner! And a huge well done to the runners up, Jack Finelli and Charlie Milward.

A massive thanks to everyone who ensured a safe running of the event.
