A stay at Buckler's Hard Marina is always a pleasure, but it was wonderful recently to welcome Eve and Trisha on board, who were visiting from the US to explore their ancestral connection to naval shipbuilding at Buckler’s Hard in the 16th and 17th century. Read more below:
One of the great names associated with the historical ship building at Buckler’s Hard, Hampshire, during the 16th and 17th centuries, and notably during the reign of Henry VIII was the West family, providing generations of shipwrights from Joseph West, his son Edward and his sons from the mid 1700's until the demise of the shipbuilding in the 1840's.
The family were part of the construction of many Navel vessels over a century, and the names of Joseph and Mary West are on a plaque in Beaulieu Abbey Church, as well as their grave.
Their two great great, great, great, great grand children Eve Measner and Trisha Nelson, both in their 80's, travelled from the United States on the Queen Mary II, and stayed aboard Kalea for their visit, re-connecting with their historical ancestry.
If you’d like to join Kaléa for a cruise, a day sail, or even just an overnight stay to experience the classic yacht life, check out our website, Airbnb page, or get in touch to learn more.
