Every safe locomotive movement, maintenance exam and handback starts with a strong safety culture and the people who uphold it every day.

Last week, our Swietelsky UK Rail Services teams came together for our annual Safety Stand Down Day.

With a strong turnout, the day provided a valuable opportunity to share lessons learned, discuss incidents and trends, review safety performance, strengthen our safety culture, and encourage open engagement across the business.

Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and took part in the discussions and activities. The knowledge shared and conversations held will help us continue to improve and maintain the highest standards across our operations.

Safety isn't just a priority, it's the foundation of everything we do.

💫 : Supporting the The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) at Gledholt Tunnel

A great effort by the SB Rail Kirow Team supporting the engineering works at Gledholt Tunnel last week as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade programme, with the crane operations helping safely deliver critical rail infrastructure works during the blockade. The works included major track, drainage and infrastructure renewals between Stalybridge and Huddersfield.

Well done to the team and all project partners involved. Successful delivery of projects like this is only possible through excellent planning, collaboration and commitment across every discipline on site.

Safe delivery. Strong teamwork. Supporting the transformation of a better railway for all.

💫 Building on a strong legacy: the next chapter for Swietelsky UK

We’re excited to welcome Alan Atkins to Swietelsky UK as Managing Director – Operations and Technical, reporting directly to Group.

Alan will lead our Operations, Technical, Engineering and Safety functions, working closely with Alexandra Cox BAcc(Hons) ACMA, Managing Director – Finance & Commercial, and the wider leadership team. Together, Alan and Alex will help align operational performance, commercial success and sustainable growth as we prepare for the future of UK rail.

His appointment strengthens our leadership team at a pivotal time for the business. Building on our trusted UK platform, the acquisition of HNRC and the support of the wider Swietelsky AG Group, we are strengthening our rail engineering and fleet capability across locomotive and traction unit operations, renewals, overhauls, on-track machinery and specialist plant.

With a strong platform already in place, this next chapter brings together our people, capability and ambition to support our customers, grow as a team and build an even stronger future for Swietelsky UK. Craig Goldie will remain in the company in a non-executive advisory role.

🌟 Work Experience Spotlight – Dylan Koo 🌟

Swietelsky UK is proud to recognise the enthusiasm and commitment shown by Dylan Koo, son of our valued colleague Mark Koo, during his recent two-week work experience placement at our Guide Bridge OTM Depot.

During his placement, Dylan gained hands-on experience in:
🔧 Cleaning, lubricating and greasing machine components
🚆 Assisting with preparations for maintenance and inspection
📏 Wheel gauging and profile measurements
🔦 Assisting with filter changes
🛠️ Replacing suction and axle box breather filters

Dylan embraced every opportunity to learn and developed a valuable insight into the engineering and maintenance activities that keep our fleet operating safely and efficiently.
