This morning I was on the phones and dispatch like normal — and a passenger said something towards the end of the call that genuinely made my day:

“Eee can I just say… you’re the best call taker Local’s ever had. Polite, friendly, dead efficient — nowt’s ever a bother.”

I laughed and told her, “That’s because you’ve caught the owner on the headset today.”
She went “Ohhh I didn’t realise it was you, Sam!” and we had a proper little chat.

And it got me thinking…

This is what makes Local… Local.

We’re not some faceless company where you’re a booking number and the person in charge is 300 miles away. Most days I’m still right in the thick of it — same as the team:

Call taker.
Dispatcher.
Marketing.
Social media.
Finance.
Operations manager.
Business development.
(And aye… I’ve even been known to jump in a car when we’re under it.)

Not because we’re short staffed.
Because when you build something from scratch in your own community, you care differently. You hear it in the calls, you see it in the bookings, you feel it when things go right — and when they don’t.

Meet Darrell — or as most people know him… Gab

If you’re from Ryton, Crawcrook or Greenside, chances are you already know this face — the original owner of Gabbys Taxis - Ryton.

Before Local ever existed, Gabbys was the taxi firm around here. Trusted, familiar and providing an exceptional service for 16 years. A little over four years ago, when Gabbys joined Local, one thing mattered more than anything else:

That nothing important was lost.

Gab stayed.
The service stayed.
The care stayed.

What changed was the support behind the scenes — giving drivers more stability, passengers more reliability, and the business a future that didn’t mean burning out the people who built it.

Here’s a full-circle moment too — Gabbys Taxis was the very first taxi firm I ever worked for. Gab and his wife Heather aren’t just colleagues to me, they’re family. And their two sons Nick & Jack still drive with us today 🤝🫶🏼

That’s what this is really about.

Not takeovers.
Not logos.
Not numbers.

It’s about protecting what people love, keeping familiar faces behind the wheel, and making sure local taxi services don’t disappear when things change.

Four years on, Gab’s still doing what he’s always done — looking after people. Just with a Local sign on the car now.

Same man.
Same standards.
Same community.
