Sweden has moved up the list of relocation destinations for UK nationals significantly in the past few years. Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö - quality of life, work-life balance, and a well-organised public system.

A few practical things that tend to surprise people making the move:

👉🏻 Customs documentation: Sweden is an EU member, so the move from the UK requires post-Brexit customs clearance - UK export declaration, Swedish import, and Transfer of Residence Relief if you're establishing permanent residence.

👉🏻 Registration: getting a personnummer (personal identity number) from Skatteverket takes time after arrival and affects what you can access - from opening a bank account to registering with a GP. It's worth applying as soon as you're eligible.

👉🏻 Climate and apartments: Swedish apartments are well-insulated for winter, but furniture that works in a UK Victorian terrace may be oversized for a Swedish leilighet. It's worth measuring before you pack.

Some properties simply don't let furniture through the front door 🚪

Narrow staircases in French apartment buildings. Canal houses in Amsterdam with steep internal stairs. Old town properties in European cities where a sofa physically cannot make the turn on a landing.

👉🏻 This is common enough in European cities that it needs to be planned for - not discovered on collection day.

Most people pack their laptop in their hand luggage. What about the rest of the setup?

Monitors, ergonomic chairs, adjustable desks, docking stations, studio lighting, specialist keyboards - a professional home office set up over several years can be worth several thousand pounds. It's also fragile, electronics-heavy, and from a customs perspective, it has declared value that needs to be listed correctly on the inventory.

A few things worth knowing: electronics need proper packing — not just cardboard boxes. Foam inserts, double-walled boxes, fragile labelling, and position in the vehicle all matter. Your home office equipment should appear on the customs inventory with accurate values. And most standard home insurance policies don't cover goods in international transit.

🇦🇹 Austria doesn't come up as often as Spain or France in conversations about moving abroad. That's partly why Vienna remains one of the more pleasant surprises for UK expats who do make the move.

✅ Excellent public transport, strong healthcare, central European location and property prices that are still significantly lower than London or Munich for comparable quality.

Moving from the UK to Austria requires full post-Brexit customs documentation. UK export declaration, Austrian import clearance, and if you're establishing permanent residence, a Transfer of Residence Relief application to avoid paying import duty on your personal belongings.

The registration process in Austria involves the Meldezettel - a compulsory address registration that needs to be completed within three days of arriving at a new property. You'll need a document from your landlord or building management. This is a common surprise for UK nationals who assume registration is optional or informal.

🇮🇪 UK to Ireland looks simple on a map. Logistically, it's more complicated than most people expect.

Ireland is an EU member state. Post-Brexit, moves from Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) to Ireland require full customs clearance - the same export declaration, ENS filing, and import documentation as any other UK to EU route.

Moves from Northern Ireland are different. The Northern Ireland Protocol means NI has a unique customs position that affects how goods move to the Republic.

The other thing to know: most road routes go through the UK mainland, across to France or via a direct UK to Ireland ferry. The right routing depends on load size, timing, and whether you're in Northern Ireland or Great Britain.

Your contents insurance almost certainly does not cover an international removal. Most policies exclude goods in transit, especially cross-border.

This matters because: the journey from your front door in Leeds to an apartment in Valencia involves multiple handlings, a border crossing, and potentially a week in a storage facility. That's more exposure than sitting in a house.

Standard removal cover - which all reputable companies carry - covers loss or damage during transit up to a set value. It applies to goods in our care.

If your items are high value - antiques, fine art, jewellery, specialist equipment - standard cover may not reflect the actual replacement cost. Specialist transit insurance exists for exactly this situation, and it's worth arranging before collection day, not after 💡

Not every move is a three-bedroom family home 🏠

If you're moving a studio flat, a bedroom's worth of belongings, or selected furniture to a new country - a full truck is more than you need and more than you should pay for.

We scheduled part load departures on all major UK to Europe routes throughout the month. You pay for the space your items actually take up. The packing, handling, and customs clearance are identical to a full move.

It works particularly well for: students finishing studies abroad, professionals relocating solo, people sending furniture ahead before a full move, and anyone keeping some things in storage while settling in first 💡
