Wincanton and Screwfix switch to alternative fuel to lower transport emissions by up to 90% https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/freight-logistics/supply-chain/wincanton-and-screwfix-switch-to-alternative-fuel-to-lower-transport-emissions-by-up-to-90/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wincanton-and-screwfix-switch-to-alternative-fuel-to-lower-transport-emissions-by-up-to-90
Wincanton, a leading supply chain partner for UK business, has announced that 85% of its logistics vehicle fleet serving Screwfix now refuels with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), in a bold sustainability initiative to eliminate carbon emissions.

Wincanton and the Screwfix Logistics Team launched a trial in 2022 involving 48 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) operating from the Screwfix distribution centre in Lichfield, Staffordshire. Screwfix worked with its truck manufacturer to make sure that the HVO specification fuel was compatible with the fleet, before installing HVO fuel tanks at its Distribution Centres. The results were promising, surpassing the business’ expectations.

Vehicles operating from Stafford DC joined the HVO usage in March 2023, driving the green biofuel usage to 85% of the entire Screwfix’s fleet – using approximately 90,000 litres of HVO per week.

Ian Howe, Supply Chain and Logistics Director at Screwfix, commented: “Being a responsible business is hugely important to Screwfix and tackling our climate impact by reducing carbon emissions is crucial. With over 870 stores across the UK and Ireland, transport is a key focus for Screwfix’ commitment in serving local communities, and we are determined to drive a real and material difference, in reducing emissions and improving air quality. The results are impressively encouraging, and we’re exploring how we can go further.”

Ian Keilty, Chief Operating Officer at Wincanton, commented: Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for both Wincanton and Screwfix as we build towards our shared target of net-zero emissions by 2040. It’s also a great example of how Wincanton supports its partners to drive positive change within their operations, and we’re proud to be delivering this initiative for such a valued, long-term customer.”

Made from 100% waste materials, HVO is an alternative fuel that uses renewable feedstocks and food wastes, including cooking oil. HVO diesel not only helps Screwfix minimize carbon emissions but also reduce the impact transport has on air quality. In fact, using HVO reduces a journey’s CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions by up to 90% and Particulate Matter by 83%.

The move forms part of the Wincanton Group’s wider commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 across its operations. Wincanton has been a trusted supply chain partner to Screwfix for nearly two decades, providing warehousing and transportation services to support its continued growth. Reducing carbon emissions is also part of Screwfix’s bold sustainability commitment that covers multiple areas, including reducing and recycling waste and sourcing responsibly.

Volvo’s most sold truck celebrates 30 years of innovation https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/trucks/volvos-most-sold-truck-celebrates-30-years-of-innovation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=volvos-most-sold-truck-celebrates-30-years-of-innovation

Time to celebrate! Today it’s 30 years since Volvo Trucks introduced the Volvo FH, the company’s best-selling truck ever. From the start, Volvo’s flagship model has been characterised by its distinctive exterior and interior design, superb driver comfort and technically advanced efficiency and safety solutions.

The Volvo FH is one of the industry’s most successful models ever with nearly 1.4 million trucks sold in around 80 markets all over the world. New from the wheels up, offering excellent driveability and fuel efficiency, the Volvo FH quickly came to represent a completely new standard in truck driving when it was launched in 1993. 30 years later, the Volvo FH is truly iconic.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, says: “The Volvo FH is the perfect representation of a customer-focused mindset and a model that has been pushing the boundaries for 30 years. In all crucial areas like driver comfort, fuel efficiency, safety and productivity, we have never stopped improving this truck. I’m very proud that today our customers can order the Volvo FH as electric-, gas- and diesel-powered.”

A groundbreaking innovation leader from the beginning

The Volvo FH has been and remains an innovation leader. It was launched with a totally new chassis, using a design that facilitated flexible solutions for different transport applications. The model’s groundbreaking driveline was also paired with completely new 12- and 16-litre engines while an all-new cab offered outstanding aerodynamics and driver comfort.

The innovations have continued through the years, always with Volvo’s core values of safety, quality and care for the environment as the starting point. Innovation milestones over the past three decades can be seen in the driver’s airbag, the I-Shift automated gearbox and Volvo Dynamic Steering, which provides effortless steering and great manoeuvrability.

With regards to exterior design, unique slimly designed rear-view mirrors give better direct vision for the driver while V-shaped headlamps offer both improved visibility and comfort and also give the truck its distinctive appearance. These are just two examples of how Volvo’s technology and design are used to add valuable benefits for the driver.

Ylva Dalerstedt, Long Haul Segment Manager at Volvo Trucks, adds: “The first-generation Volvo FH was a game changer that totally transformed the concept of a modern truck. Since then, we have continued to set new standards in trucking and launched five further generations of this truck.

“Our success formula has been to make use of the very latest technology in a way that always adds clear benefits for our customers and drivers. As proof of our successful continuous improvement efforts and constant evolution, I’m very proud that the Volvo FH is the only truck that has been named ‘International Truck of the Year’ three times.”

Government partnership with logistics could unlock £3.9 billion in economic growth, says Logistics UK https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/haulage/government-partnership-with-logistics-could-unlock-3-9-billion-in-economic-growth-says-logistics-uk/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=government-partnership-with-logistics-could-unlock-3-9-billion-in-economic-growth-says-logistics-uk
More targeted government investment – combined with action to improve the flow of goods across borders and a commitment to work in closer partnership with the logistics sector – could boost GDP by £3.9 billion per annum by 2030, and generate enough revenue to finance the salaries of 20,000 nurses according to a new independent report by Oxford Economics on behalf of business group Logistics UK. ‘Logistics: Delivering a solution to the UK’s productivity puzzle’ outlines how the ability of UK’s logistics system to support greater competition and efficiency in the UK economy is being held back by challenges caused by border friction and a lack of investment in national infrastructure, innovation and skills – which, if addressed, could also result in an increase in annual household disposable income.

David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK comments: “The UK’s economy faces a productivity challenge at present, but logistics can be a big part of the solution. This report, conducted on our behalf by Oxford Economics, emphasises how improving the productivity of the logistics sector, one of the UK’s most significant economic contributors, would have a positive impact on the whole economy. However, the findings also suggest that reversing the UK’s decline in productivity and delivering these gains is beyond the control of industry operators alone and will take concerted effort and investment by government.

“To ensure that the nation’s decline in productivity is addressed, it is imperative that government works with the sector to establish a cross-Whitehall Logistics Productivity Forum, to maximise the benefits that this sector can deliver to the whole economy.”

With the UK currently in joint 19th position in the World Bank logistics rankings – a substantial drop from an average ranking of 6th between 2012 and 2018 – the report, sponsored by Amazon and Volvo Trucks, outlines how a return to the top ten would unlock a significant boost in GDP through productivity gains. As Mr Wells continues, this would not only result in an approximate £80 per annum increase to the annual income of the UK’s 30 million households – a £2.3 billion boost to domestic budgets by 2030 – but could also raise enough in additional taxation to finance the annual salaries of more than 20,000 nurses. If the UK was to become a global leader in logistics, this benefit would be doubled to £7.9 billion a year.

“To deliver the gains outlined in this report, the logistics sector requires government to work in strategic partnership with the private sector to deliver improved infrastructure, reduce friction at the country’s borders to boost trade, resolve skills gaps and invest in innovation to drive efficiency.”

The new analysis also highlights that, while there would be a significant economic benefit for the UK from addressing these challenges to close the gap with other nations, this must be achieved alongside delivering the transition to a green economy.

Mr Wells adds: “If the UK gets the transition to net zero right, it will align with long term higher productivity. In the short-term, significant levels of investment are required to make the necessary switch efficiently. Both public and private investment needs to avoid stranded assets. The logistics sector and government must work in partnership ensure that taxpayer and private investment in the transition delivers value for money and supports, rather than hinders, economic growth.

“Government support is vital to support the pace of change required, to prevent a loss in private sector efficiency, and ensure a smooth transition for all sectors of the economy.”

Anubhav Mohanty, Associate Director at Oxford Economics, added, “Our analysis highlights the potential value that can be gleaned by enhancing the UK’s logistics performance, by improving the predictability, timeliness and value-for-money of domestic and international shipments, including through improvements to infrastructure and customs processes and investment in innovation and skills. But a collective effort is required, with the government collaborating closely with businesses, to ensure that the country’s logistics sector can operate optimally, thereby bolstering overall economic growth and global competitiveness.”

Frank Redman & Sons sees fast results from Wheely-Safe technology https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/technology/frank-redman-sons-sees-fast-results-from-wheely-safe-technology/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=frank-redman-sons-sees-fast-results-from-wheely-safe-technology

Wheely-Safe’s intelligent tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has already proved a wise investment at Frank Redman & Sons – saving the firm from two costly and potentially dangerous tyre blow outs.

The Bedfordshire-based aggregates business – a contract haulier for Tarmac Group – is in the process of rolling out the technology across its fleet of eight-wheel tippers and 6×2 tractor units to improve the health & safety of its operation, reduce downtime and help cut fuel costs.

Martin Redman, Owner of Frank Redman & Sons says: “We have the system installed on three of our tippers so far and five tractor units, which are pulling bulk trailers. It has already given us great results.

“On two separate occasions it has saved us from a potential blow out. As soon as the pressure dropped in the tyres, the alert started flashing in the cab and allowed the driver to pull over safely to inspect the issue. If he had carried on running as usual, it could have easily ruined the sidewall and we’d be looking at buying a new tyre. The financial savings soon tot up.”

Frank Redman & Sons has specified Wheely-Safe’s external TPMS sensors, which replace the valve cap and auto-pair with an in-cab solar receiver.

The company’s drivers are also utilising Wheely-Safe’s handy Pressure and Brake Temperature Checkers, as well as WalkAround Checkers for their daily inspections.

“The whole system is so easy to use and really simple to fit,” adds Redman. “It’s been a great addition to our operation.”

RHA welcomes Border Target Operating Model announcement https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/haulage/rha-welcomes-border-target-operating-model-announcement/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rha-welcomes-border-target-operating-model-announcement
We welcome the Government’s ambition to create the most technologically advanced border in the world, along with any measures that make it quicker and easier for UK hauliers to pass through the border whilst maintaining border security.

Given the height of these ambitions, and the increased security steps necessary outside of the European Union, we also welcome the longer timeframes for introduction announced today.

This will help ensure everyone involved in moving goods between countries – border posts, government agencies, importers and exporters – has adequate time to adjust to the new systems.

It is vital Government now works with ports of entry both at home and overseas to put the infrastructure in place to manage the new border system.

We will continue to digest the full details of the extensive document released today and keep our members informed of any issues they need to be aware of.

Asset Alliance Group continues to hit the target for Bullet Express https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/freight-logistics/supply-chain/asset-alliance-group-continues-to-hit-the-target-for-bullet-express/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=asset-alliance-group-continues-to-hit-the-target-for-bullet-express
Logistics, distribution and storage specialist, Bullet Express, has secured another 35 trucks and trailers from Asset Alliance Group to help with the rapid expansion of the business.

The Glasgow-based company has taken delivery of 14 Mercedes-Benz rigids, seven MAN 6×2 tractor units, six tri-axle Tiger Trailers and eight Lawrence David double deck trailers from the commercial vehicle specialist.

The latest contract-hire agreements come less than two years after Bullet Express secured 11 new vehicles from Asset Alliance Group, in a deal comprising five 18-tonne IVECO Eurocargo 4×2 curtainsiders and six DAF XF 480 6×2 tractor units.

Martin Craghill, Commercial Director at Bullet Express, says: “We connect supply chains and have a very visible presence on roads around the UK, so it is vitally important to refresh our fleet with quality trucks and trailers to further enhance the reputation of Bullet Express.

“For our customers, this means they can always have complete confidence that their goods are being transported by high quality and efficient vehicles.”

Supplied on three- and four-year contract hire deals, the new arrivals will be based in Glasgow and used to service the company’s 800-plus customers across the UK. Joining a 140-strong fleet, the Mercedes-Benz rigids are working for the contract services division, including retail and home delivery operations, whilst the MAN trucks are being deployed to move containers to and from Scottish ports. The 14 trailers will bolster the firm’s overnight express pallet delivery operation.

Commenting on Asset Alliance Group, Craghill adds: “We have worked with Business Development Manager, Dougie Bennett, for 30 years. It’s a can-do relationship. When our guys say ‘we need some new trucks and trailers’, we speak to Dougie and he’s very pro-active. The customer service is just fantastic. We really appreciate the quick turnaround of trucks and trailers to help with the continual growth of our business.”

Bennett says it’s a strong relationship: “I remember supplying Bullet Express with its very first curtainsider trailer all those years ago. It’s great to see this major logistics operator continue on its growth path. We are proud to be a key partner in supporting the business.”

Founded in 1990, Bullet Express has undergone a rapid expansion programme since 2021. Following the opening of a 67,000 sq ft storage facility next to Glasgow Airport last year – taking the firm’s total storage capacity to 600,000sq ft across five sites, with 40,000 pallets under management – the firm is currently exploring plans to develop a new air cargo logistics operation.

Schmitz Cargobull S.CS FREEPOST trailers prove a wise choice for Northamptonshire haulier https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/trailers/schmitz-cargobull-s-cs-freepost-trailers-prove-a-wise-choice-for-northamptonshire-haulier/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=schmitz-cargobull-s-cs-freepost-trailers-prove-a-wise-choice-for-northamptonshire-haulier
Wise Logistics has taken delivery of three S.CS FREEPOST trailers from Schmitz Cargobull to help speed up its loading times and reduce repair and maintenance costs.

The Northamptonshire general haulage firm has a long-standing relationship with Europe’s leading trailer manufacturer and was keen to add the new pillarless curtainsiders to its fleet having seen them being built on a factory tour.

Manufactured at the Schmitz Cargobull UK plant in Manchester – and designed specifically to meet the needs of the UK & Irish market – the S.CS FREEPOST offers quick, easy and safe side loading by incorporating a bolted galvanised steel cant rail and fixed aluminium roof sheet, as well as a reinforced chassis structure.

Marcin Zajac, Managing Director at Wise Logistics, says: “The roof supports you get in a traditional curtainsider can be an issue. They tend to get damaged by fork-lifts during collections for deliveries, so it’s great to add these pillarless FREEPOSTS to our trailer fleet.

“They are already proving to be great assets. They make loading faster and easier and we will see less damage to the trailer – they are the perfect solution for us.”

The new trailers will be working with Volvo FH 6×2 tractor units, transporting a wide range of goods from Wise Logistics’ 50,000 sq ft warehouse facility in Corby. They join a 20-strong trailer fleet at the business, the majority of which is made up of Schmitz Cargobull products.

“I would say 80 per cent of our trailers are built by Schmitz,” adds Zajac. “I’ve been in transport since I was a young kid and have grown up around Schmitz Cargobull trailers. It’s a name and brand I trust and respect. We are very happy to see this pillarless design added to its portfolio and the fact they are now built here in the UK is even better as it will help ensure lead times are shorter.”

In addition to high body stability, the design of the S.CS FREEPOST is focused on handling, the safety of the goods and the safety of the driver and those loading the vehicle. With no sliding posts, the trailers offer the driver free, lateral loading and unloading with a side aperture height of up to 3,200mm.

To facilitate unloading, the curtain can be tensioned from both the front and the rear. Driver safety is improved further by the Schmitz Cargobull Susi-Rail, with electrical and pneumatic connections which can be moved to the edge of the trailer to make coupling easier.

In addition, due to the bolted design, should the cant rail get damaged either by fork-lift masts or even a bridge strike it is possible to replace one of the five individual sections rather than having to replace the whole rail – which can be extremely costly.

Like all Schmitz Cargobull trailers, the S.CS FREEPOST – which is available in different heights from 4,200mm to 4,800mm – is also equipped with the proven repair-friendly MODULOS chassis with a 10-year guarantee against rust-through.

The trailers are factory fitted with the TrailerConnect® telematics system from Schmitz Cargobull, as standard.

Hi-Line Transport adds extra low Renault Trucks Ts to specialist fleet https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/fleet/hi-line-transport-adds-extra-low-renault-trucks-ts-to-specialist-fleet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hi-line-transport-adds-extra-low-renault-trucks-ts-to-specialist-fleet
Blackpool-based, specialist caravan transporters, Hi-Line Transport Ltd, has added two new 13 litre Renault Trucks T440 4×2 X-Low tractor units to its 20-strong HGV fleet. Purchased from JDS Truck and Van, the new extra low ride tractor units with full air suspension were selected for their fuel efficiency, driver comfort and streamlined cab.

The new T440 X-Lows, which are on a five-year repair and maintenance contract, join seven other Renault Trucks including five T rigids and two Premiums alongside ten 4×4 es**rt vehicles. The new trucks and will be used to move static caravans and modular units for manufacturers, holiday park operators, dealers and private owners.

Hi-Line Transport Ltd’s owner, Rory McDonald, explains why he opted for Renault Trucks: “As we operate across the UK, including cities with Clean Air Zones, I wanted to upgrade to the new Euro 6 engines for a more positive effect on emission levels. I also wanted the most fuel-efficient engine for better fuel economy and, as we are getting around 10mpg with the existing Ts on the fleet, they are performing very well compared to other manufacturers.”

Rory continues: “We need extra low ride trucks because of the height of the caravans, and the air suspension has to be caravan and road friendly so it doesn’t jolt the caravans in transit. The Renault Trucks product fitted the brief perfectly.”

The new 13 litre T440 X-Lows, with a maximum torque of 2200Nm, are coupled to Renault Trucks’ Optidriver AT2612 gearbox with automated clutch. The trucks also feature a number of optional extras including beacons and strobe lighting and bumper, corners, centre and steps in matching cab paint colour. For driver comfort, the vehicles are specified with microwave, fridge, colour multimedia screen, luxury heated and ventilated driver’s seat, leather steering wheel, convertible top bunk and performance roof console with 4 storage compartments.

Driver comfort was top of mind in the new vehicle selection as Rory explains: “The drivers are on the road all week, out Sunday or Monday and back in Thursday or Friday and the existing Ts are already very popular and the drivers are happy.

The new T440s have a very streamlined cab and are double sleepers to accommodate both the driver and the Statutory Attendant and they are definitely comfortable enough for two people to spend the week in. The vehicles have been on the road a few weeks now and they’ve been extremely well received by the drivers.”

Müller trials zero-emission HGV refrigeration https://www.ukhaulier.co.uk/news/road-transport/technology/muller-trials-zero-emission-hgv-refrigeration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=muller-trials-zero-emission-hgv-refrigeration

Müller Milk & Ingredients is trialling different technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of its HGV fleet.

The dairy company, which maintains industry leading service levels by operating logistics in-house, is testing whether solar panels and kinetic energy can power its refrigerated HGV trailers, as an alternative to refrigeration powered by diesel engines.

Müller, in partnership with Sunswap, trialed the delivery of fresh milk using refrigerated trailers that are battery and solar-powered. 100% of the energy required came from free clean energy collected by the solar panels.

In collaboration with Carrier Transicold, the business is also testing a refrigerated trailer system powered by kinetic energy. The Carrier Transicold Vector eCool converts energy generated by the trailer axle and brakes into electricity, which is then stored in a battery pack to power the refrigeration unit.

As Müller continues to prioritise supply chain resilience and lowering carbon, the trials aim to establish whether renewable energy solutions with a lower carbon footprint allow the business to maintain its quality and service levels, which sit above 99% in 2023.

Per trailer, the solar and battery-powered Sunswap system would eliminate all diesel, saving 3,700 litres and 9 tonnes of carbon every year. Carrier’s Vector eCool system would eliminate all carbon emissions associated with traditional refrigeration units operating with an auxiliary engine.

Following completion of the trials, the business will consider further testing or a wider rollout throughout its network.

Müller has also trialled fully-electric shunt vehicles within its Manchester dairy and is now considering a full rollout of the electric shunt vehicles at the site, with each vehicle saving an estimated 3,700 litres of diesel each year and 9 tonnes of carbon.

Enhanced driver training and higher capacity vehicles are also in place to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Dan Hamby, Head of Distribution at Müller Milk & Ingredients said:

“Customers and shoppers expect us to look for ways to reduce carbon whilst maintaining our industry leading levels of product quality and customer service.

“With each trailer capable of transporting 8,000 bottles of milk, we have to maintain the correct temperature and make sure we hit the delivery windows to meet our customer obligations. Our approach is to test, learn and introduce innovation which is sustainable and scalable.

“We are unique in that the vast majority of our logistics operations are in-house, giving us the ability to

work with our customers, and throughout the supply, to find the right solutions. As we look to deliver a

better dairy future, we will continually innovate to reduce our impact.”

Michael Lowe, Sunswap CEO said:

“We started Sunswap, the world’s only purpose-built battery and solar-powered refrigeration system to support forward-thinking and innovative distributors such as Müller to decarbonise their supply chain and reduce their energy costs. We’re thrilled to complete yet another successful trial ahead of entering production and our units entering service at the beginning of 2024.”

Scott Dargan, Managing Director UK & Northern Europe at Carrier Transicold said:

“Since its launch in 2020 the Vector eCool has been helping an ever-growing number of businesses meet their sustainability goals, and we’re delighted to see Müller join that list. As it was the first trailer system of its kind available in the UK, we were proud to lead the charge when it came to decarbonising the cold chain, and now we look forward to working closely with the Müller team to ensure they maximise the benefits the eCool can deliver.”
